India: Desperate times for Agra's railway coolies, lockdowns force many to look for other jobs

Agra, Jun 6 (PTI) Lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic have hit coolies at Agra's railways stations hard, forcing many of them out of work.

Some of them now pull rickshaws, others work as labourers.

Sharing his ordeal, Munna Khan (50), a coolie at Agra Cantt railway station, told PTI, "There are 102 coolies at the station who are divided into two shifts. In one shift about 52 coolies are allowed to work, but these days only 10-25 coolies are coming due to less number of passengers."

India: BKU activists burn copies of farm laws at collectorate

Ghaziabad, Jun 5 (PTI) The Ghaziabad unit of the Bhartiya Kisan Union staged a protest at the district collectorate here and burnt copies of the Centre's three farm laws on Saturday to mark the day of the promulgation of their ordinances last year.

The farmers observed the day as the Sampoorna Kranti Diwas' as per their earlier plans.

Addressing the farmers' gathering, BKU district president Bijendra Singh said the Union government is underestimating farmers.

India: UP BJP leader arrested for helping criminal escape

Kanpur (UP), Jun 3 (PTI) A history-sheeter was arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar district on Friday along with a former BJP office bearer, who allegedly helped the criminal escape from police custody, officials said.

The criminal, Manoj Singh and BJP's Narain Singh Bhadauria, were arrested on Thursday.

India: Woman raped by 'tantrik' in UP

Mathura, Jun 5 (PTI) A married woman was allegedly raped by a 'tantrik' in a village in Barsana area, police said on Saturday.

'Tantrik' Narendra visited the village along with his associate, Sandeep Tomar, and on Thursday practised 'jhaadphoonk' (witchcraft) on villagers. He asked the woman to visit him later in the night, they said.

Instead of treating her, the 'tantrik' raped her, the police said.

India: Sharp students dismay at cancellation of UP Board's exams

Kanpur: Although the UP Board has cancelled its examinations amid dread of coronavirus, yet the studious students are dismayed.

The front benchers are of the opinion if the situations are not adverse they should be given a chance to appear at examinations.

Why so? they were asked to comment. They think valuation will be influenced in the absence of exams. The backbenchers are pleased to know of this news.

India: UP Man dies after neighbours force him to drink poison

Amethi (UP), Jun 4 (PTI) A 35-year-old man was allegedly killed by his neighbours who beat him up and forcibly gave him poison in Amethi area, police said on Friday.

Ram Bharat Srivastava was on Thursday beaten with sticks by Umesh Pandey and Nilesh, who dragged him to their house in Ganesh Lal Bharetha village, the deceased's brother Shiv Bharat said.

He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition from where he was referred to Lucknow but he died on the way, the brother added.

India: Ambedkar statue damaged in UP village

Ballia (UP), Jun 4 (PTI) A statue of social reformer B R Ambedkar was found damaged in a village here, police said on Friday.

The statue in Kothiya village was later repaired and police deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident, they said.

The hands and spectacles of Ambedkar's statue were damaged by some miscreants on Thursday. Villagers informed the police after they noticed this, the police said.

India: Headless body of woman found in UP's Kaushambi

Kaushambi (UP), Jun 3 (PTI) A headless body of an unidentified woman was found on Thursday outside Makhdumpur village in Karari area here, police said.

"Body of a woman, about 35-year-old, has been recovered near a dry canal. Both her legs were tied," Superintendent of Police Abhinandan said.

A police team has been constituted to probe the matter, he said.

India: 2 youth arrested for raping 16-yr-old girl in UP

Ballia (UP), Jun 3 (PTI) Two youth were arrested here on Thursday for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl, police said.

Rajesh Yadav and Akash Yadav, both aged about 23 years, were arrested in Pakwainar village, Station House Officer Rasda Nagesh Upadhyay said.

The incident took place on May 29 when the girl had gone to a field to attend the nature's call, he said.
