India: CRPF commando injured in naxal encounter dies

Raipur, Feb 18 (PTI) A CRPF commando, who was injured in an encounter with Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district last week, died at a private hospital in Raipur on Tuesday, police said.

Head constable Ajit Singh succumbed to bullet injuries in his abdomen while undergoing treatment at Sri Narayana Hospital at around 11.25 am on Tuesday, an official said.

Aizawl, Feb 17 (PTI) Mizoram Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai on Monday called for concerted efforts to control and fight the growing HIV/AIDS prevalence in the state.

Delivering his customary speech on the opening day of the Assembly's Budget Session, Pillai, who assumed charge in October last year, said AIDS was a serious problem in the state, which "should be tackled on a war-footing".

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) Nirbhaya's parents on Monday expressed hope that the four convicts in their daughter's rape-and-murder case would finally be hanged on March 3, the latest execution date fixed by a court after two earlier death warrants were stayed.

"We hope the order (death warrant) is finally executed," her mother said, just after a Delhi court issued fresh death warrants against the four convicts setting up their execution on March 3 at 6 am.

India: No beef ban in Kerala Police academy: Official

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 17 (PTI) The Kerala Police Academy on Monday dismissed reports of a ban on beef on its campus and said the dish along with mutton have been excluded from the menu for new trainees based on dietitian's instructions.

Reacting to reports in a section of media that beef had been banned in the police canteen, academy Director B Sandhya, ADGP, said there was no such prohibition on the popular dish and dubbed the controversy a "media creation".

While speaking on the state finance bill, Mitra said steps have been taken to ensure that NPAs in LIC increases.

Indian Air Force officer detained in Tokyo

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) An IAF officer, undertaking a military course at a Japanese institute, has been detained by police in Tokyo following a complaint of misconduct by a woman, official sources said.

The Wing Commander was detained by police in Tokyo on February 6 and his family has approached a local court to secure his release, they said.

India: Man sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping Odisha girl

Balasore (Odisha), Feb 17 (PTI) A man in Odisha's Balasore district was sentenced to 20 years in jail on Monday for raping a 14-year-old girl in 2017.

Special POCSO court and additional sessions judge Girija Prasad Mohapatra convicted Augusta Singh in the rape case and sentenced him to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment, besides slapping a fine of Rs 30,000. In case of a default, he has to undergo another 13 months in jail.
