India summons Turkish envoy over Erdogan's remarks on Kashmir

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India summoned the Turkish ambassador on Monday to lodge a diplomatic protest over President Tayyip Erdogan’s remarks on the disputed region of Kashmir and warned it would have a bearing on bilateral ties.

During a visit to Pakistan last week, Erdogan said the situation in Indian Kashmir was worsening because of sweeping changes New Delhi introduced in the Muslim-majority territory and that Turkey stood in solidarity with the people of Kashmir.

India's use of facial recognition tech during protests causes stir

India: Man, parents get 10 years in jail for killing wife over dowry dispute in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Feb 15 (PTI) A local court has sent a man and his parents to jail for 10 years for killing his wife over dowry dispute.

Also a fine of Rs 35,000 was imposed on each of the convicts -- Nikhil, his father Madanlal and mother Vimlesh.

According to the prosecution, Sikha was strangled to death by her in-laws over dowry dispute at Gyanamajra village in Shamli district in 2016. She was married to Nikhil in 2013.

Moody's cuts India growth projection to 5.4 pc for 2020

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) Moody's Investors Service on Monday slashed India's growth forecast to 5.4 per cent for 2020 from 6.6 per cent projected earlier on slower than expected economic recovery.

In its update on Global Macro Outlook, Moody's said India's economy has decelerated rapidly over the last two years and expects economic recovery to begin in the current quarter.

India to send consignment of medical supplies to China later this week to combat coronavirus

Beijing, Feb 17 (PTI) India will send a consignment of medical supplies on a relief flight to Wuhan city later this week to support China in combating the deadly coronavirus outbreak in the country, Indian Embassy in China said on Monday.

The death toll from COVID-19 outbreak in China has climbed to 1,770 after 105 more people died, mostly in the worst-hit Hubei province, officials said on Monday.

India: Anti-CAA protests continue for third day in TN

Chennai, Feb 16 (PTI) Anti-CAA protests by members of Muslim community continued for the third day on Sunday in Old Washermanpet area in the city and some other parts of Tamil Nadu.

The fresh round of agitations against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), after a lull since December, followed the violence that broke out during a protest here on Friday in which four police personnel and some protesters suffered injuries.

India: Modi govt attacking rights of SC/ST: Selja

Chandigarh, Feb 16 (PTI) In the backdrop of an apex court ruling that states are not bound to provide reservation in appointments or promotions, the Haryana Congress on Sunday held a protest, accusing the Narendra Modi government of attacking rights of the STs/SCs and OBCs.

The Supreme Court had given the judgment last week, upholding the contention of the Uttarakand BJP government.

Joint India-Bangladesh military exercise concludes

Umroi (Meghalaya), Feb 16 (PTI) A joint military exercise between the armies of India and Bangladesh concluded in Meghalaya's Umroi on Sunday, defence officials said.

A total of 150 personnel each from the two armies had taken part in the ninth edition of the two-week-long 'SAMPRITI' military exercise conducted at the Joint Training Node here, Defence spokesperson Ratnakar Singh said.

India: Centre's decisions leading to suspicion: Gehlot

Jaipur, Feb 16 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot here on Sunday accused the BJP-led Union government of taking arbitrary decisions, leading to an environment of suspicion in the country.

He said the intention of those at the helm at the Centre was not clear due to which it was not known where the country was headed to.

Gehlot said this while addressing a dharna held in the backdrop of an apex court ruling that states are not bound to provide reservation in appointments or promotions.
