India: SC notice to J&K on plea challenging Omar's detention

New Delhi, Feb 14 (PTI) The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday on a plea filed by Sara Abdullah Pilot challenging the detention of her brother and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah under the Public Safety Act.

A bench, comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Indira Banerjee, said it would hear on March 2 Pilot's plea challenging Abdullah's detention.

Adani group, AAI ink pacts for managing three airports

Mumbai, Feb 14 ( PTI) Adani Group on Friday inked agreements with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the management, operations and development of Ahmedabad, Mangaluru and Lucknow airports.

"Today, as we sign the concession agreements for Mangaluru, Lucknow & A'bad with the AAI, its the beginning of another historic journey catering to India's exponential airport infra demands," Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said in a tweet.

Kanpur: Strangely enough valentine's day got a mention in the lecture of a maulana delivered prior to the usual Arabic Khutba at a mosque on the congregational prayer of Friday. 

What he meant to emphasise at the old mosque here was that the faithful should instruct the girls to wear a proper dress and also to keep them distant from unethical recreations.

India keeps lid on Kashmir’s internet 6 months into lockdown

NEW DELHI (AP) — Six months after India’s government stripped restive Kashmir of its semi-autonomy and enforced a total communications blackout, it is heralding the restoration of limited, slow-speed internet as a step toward normalcy.

But for the Himalayan region’s 7 million people, the reality is far different. They are only allowed to access government-approved websites. Popular social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter remain blocked. And while users can access YouTube and Netflix, the internet service is too slow to stream video.

India: Muzaffarnagar riots: Union min Sanjeev Balyan appears in court

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Feb 13 (PTI) Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan on Thursday appeared in a local court here in connection with a case of violating prohibitory orders and inciting communal tension during the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.

Special court judge Ram Sudh Singh fixed April 3 for appearance of the other accused in the case involving BJP leaders, including UP minister Suresh Rana.

Kashmir: Internet restored after being snapped

Srinagar, Feb 13 (PTI) Mobile Internet services was restored in Kashmir on Thursday afternoon, hours after authorities had suspended the facility to prevent rumours about the health of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

The services were snapped late Wednesday night after some social media posts claimed the health of the 90-year-old Geelani deteriorated, they said.

India: Follow norms in dealing with MPs, MLAs or face action: Govt to bureaucrats

New Delhi, Feb 13 (PTI) All central and state government officers have been asked to follow norms in dealing with communications from MPs and MLAs or face action, according to an official order.

Chief secretaries of all states/union territories have been asked to sensitise officials with regard to their duties and obligations in so far as the movement of Members of Parliament (MPs) in general and more particularly during Parliament sessions, it said.

India: Retail inflation inches up to 7.59 pc in January

New Delhi, Feb 12 (PTI) Retail inflation inched up to 7.59 per cent in January on costlier food items, showed government data on Wednesday.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based retail inflation was 7.35 per cent in December 2019 and 1.97 per cent in January last year.

The food inflation last month was 13.63 per cent, compared with (-)2.24 per cent in January 2019. However, it is down from 14.19 per cent in December.

The Reserve Bank of India had kept the key policy rate unchanged earlier this month mainly due to high inflation.

India: School trustee held for raping 15-year-old student in Gujrat

Surendranagar, Feb 12 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by the trustee of a residential school in Gujarat's Surendranagar district, police said on Wednesday.

The police on Wednesday arrested Batukbhai Bhatti after the Class 10 student's mother lodged an FIR at Chotila police station, accusing him of raping her daughter, an official said.
