India: Permission denied for Aishe Ghosh's rally in Durgapur

Kolkata, Feb 12 (PTI) Police denied permission for a rally to be attended by Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh in Durgapur on Wednesday as a procession by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was scheduled in the same route there.

The permission was not granted because of security-related issues, police sources said.

India: RSS, BJP trying to do away with reservation: Thorat

Mumbai,Feb 12 (PTI) Maharashtra Congress chief and state Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat on Wednesday accused the RSS and the BJP of being anti-reservation, and said they are trying to do away with quota for STs, SCs and OBCs given by the Constitution.

He said the Congress will never let that happen and launch a fight against the BJP to protect reservation.

India: Man convicted of harassing wife for dowry

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Feb 13 (PTI) A court in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district has sentenced a police sub-inspector and his parents to two years imprisonment for harassing his wife for dowry.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Raj Magal Singh Yadav has also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convicts.

Rekha was being harassed for dowry demands for many years, her lawyer said. The couple got married in 2007.

India: 13 killed in bus-truck collision in UP's Firozabad

Firozabad (UP), Feb 13 (PTI) Thirteen people were killed and 31 seriously injured as the private bus in which they were travelling collided with a truck on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior police official said on Thursday.

Senior Superintendent of Police Sachindra Patel said the accident happened around 10 pm on Wednesday in Nagla Khangar police station area.

India: Bengal BJP divided on strategy for 2021 state polls

Kolkata, Feb 13 (PTI) After the BJP's defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections, poll managers of its West Bengal unit are divided whether to push its aggressive strategy on the CAA-NRC or mellow it down and lace it with alternative policies of governance.

The BJP that recently suffered a defeat at the hands of the AAP, which won the polls for the third consecutive time on the plank of good governance, is in two minds about its strategy for 2021 Assembly polls in West Bengal.

India: 8-phase panchayat bypolls in J-K to begin from March 5

Jammu, Feb 13 (PTI) By-election to over 12,500 panchayat seats in Jammu and Kashmir would be held in eight phases from March 5, the Union Territory's Chief Electoral Officer Shailender Kumar said on Thursday.

Polling would be held from March 5 to March 20 and ballots would be used for casting votes, he said.

Three Fire-Fighters Killed, Nine Injured In Building Collapse In Indian-Controlled Kashmir

NEW DELHI, Feb 13 (NNN-PTI) – At least three fire-fighters were killed and nine others, including four civilians, injured, after a building collapsed, following a fire incident in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The building collapsed at Talab Tiloo area of Jammu city, the winter capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

“Three fire-fighters were killed and five of their colleagues injured, after they went inside to douse the fire at a three-storey building,” a police official, posted in Jammu said. “Apart from this, four civilians were also injured in the incident.”

India: Kejriwal to be sworn in as CM on Feb 16 at Ramlila Maidan

New Delhi, Feb 12 (PTI) Arvind Kejriwal is likely to be sworn in as the chief minister of Delhi on February 16 for the third time at the Ramlila Maidan, sources said on Wednesday.

Kejriwal's oath-taking ceremony at the Ramlila Maidan also assumes significance as it was from this ground that he along with Anna Hazare led a massive anti-corruption agitation.

India: Bhim Army chief calls for Bharat Bandh on Feb 23

New Delhi, Feb 12 (PTI) Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad on Wednesday called for a 'Bharat Bandh' on February 23 against a Supreme Court ruling that states were not bound to provide reservation in promotion and appointments in public employment and also quota is not a fundamental right.

He urged MPs and MLAs belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes to build pressure on the government to bring an ordinance to nullify the ruling.
