India: Heavy police deployment at Mandi House in view of anti-CAA protest call

New Delhi, Feb 10 (PTI) There was a heavy police deployment in New Delhi's Mandi House area on Monday morning in view of a protest call against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

According to a senior police official, they had refused permission for the protest march as the budget session of Parliament was going on.

Guwahati, Feb 10 (PTI) Assam is likely to conduct an exercise to identify the state's indigenous Muslim population and segregate them from illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, even as doubts over the accuracy of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) are yet to be addressed.

As per the plans, the survey will be conducted to identify people of four communities -- Goria, Moria, Desi and Jolah of the tea tribes, considered as indigenous.

India: Omar Abdullah's sister moves SC challenging his detention under PSA

New Delhi, Feb 10 (PTI) Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah's sister on Monday moved the Supreme Court to challenge his detention under the Public Safety Act.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioner, mentioned the matter for urgent listing before a bench headed by Justice N V Ramana.

Sibal told the bench that they have filed a habeas corpus petition challenging the detention of Abdullah under the PSA and the matter should be heard this week.

The bench agreed for urgent listing of the matter.

India: Van driver booked for molesting girl student

Nagpur, Feb 9 (PTI) A teenage girl was allegedly molested by the driver of her school van in Umred in Maharashtra's Nagpur district last week, police said on Sunday.

Following a complaint lodged by the girl's father, the police have registered an FIR against the 37-year-old driver under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

India: Man held for sexually harassing minor daughter

Nagpur, Feb 9 (PTI) A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly sexually harassing his nearly four-year-old daughter at their residence in Nagpur, police said.

The action against the 37-year-old accused was taken based on a complaint lodged by his wife, an inspector of Kanhan Police Station said.

India: Centre failed to defend reservation system

New Delhi, Feb 10 (PTI) Opposition parties in Lok Sabha on Monday targeted the government over the Supreme Court order that states are not bound to provide reservation in appointments, saying the Centre has failed to defend the reservation system.

Hitting back, the government said the Congress is trying to politicise a sensitive issue. "This is my charge that the Congress is politicising the sensitive issue," Defence Minister and deputy leader of the House Rajnath Singh said.

India: Fresh batch of foreign envoys to visit JK this week

Srinagar, Feb 10 (PTI) A fresh batch of foreign envoys will visit Jammu and Kashmir this week to get first-hand information about the ground situation after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, officials said on Monday.

The first batch of envoys, including the US Ambassador to India, had visited Jammu and Kashmir last month.

India: Gurukul system of education must be revived: RSS' Joshi

Panaji, Feb 10 (PTI) Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh general secretary Suresh 'Bhaiyyaji' Joshi said 'gurukul' system of education should be revived in the country and Sanskrit should be made part of the curriculum, irrespective of who will feel "good or bad".

Speaking at Dona Paula near here on Sunday, Joshi said the Centre should encourage those "who positively experiment in the educational system".

India: 5 accused of murder, rape escape from Karjat jail

Mumbai, Feb 10 (PTI) Five people arrested for crimes like murder, rape and carrying arms escaped on Sunday evening from Karjat Jail in Maharashtra's Raigad district, some 100 kilometres from here, police said.

The five were identified as Dnyaneshwar Tukaram Kolhe, Akshay Ramdas Raut, Mohan Kundlik More, Chandrakant Mahadev Raut and Gangadhar Jagtap.
