India: Odisha Congress workers attacked before meeting

Puri, Feb 17 (PTI) A group of men attacked and injured three Congress workers in front of a party office in Puri on Monday, in which senior leaders including AICC general secretary and Odisha in-charge Jitendra Singh were present.

One person was detained in connection with the attack and the injured were taken to hospital, police said.

India: Body of rape accused found hanging from tree in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Feb 18 (PTI) The body of a rape accused was found hanging from a tree at a village in Shamli district, police said on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with a rape case on January 17 and was released on bail on February 11, SP Vineet Jaiswal said.

He said the body was sent for postmortem and efforts were underway to ascertain the cause of the death.

India: Serial rapist and killer 'Cyanide' Mohan gets lifer in 19th murder case

Mangaluru, Feb 18 (PTI) Notorious serial killer 'Cyanide' Mohan has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here for the murder of a 23-year old woman from Kasaragod district of Kerala in 2006, the 19th of the 20 murder cases slapped against him.

Sixth additional district and sessions court judge Sayeedunnisa on Monday sentenced Mohan to life and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on him.

The sentence shall commence after he serves the sentence of imprisonment in the other cases, the judge said.

India: CPI(M) slams cases against social media users in J-K

New Delhi, Feb 18 (PTI) The CPI(M) on Tuesday slammed the government over FIRs being registered against social media users in Jammu and Kashmir and said that while it was "touting normalcy" in the union territory, it was charging people who used the Internet which was their basic right.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday registered a case against various people for defying government orders on use of social media.

India: RSS holds closed door meeting with 70 columnists

New Delhi, Feb 18 (PTI) The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is holding a daylong meeting with 70 columnists from across India on Tuesday in an effort to clear misconceptions about the organisation, sources said.

RSS chief Bhagwat, who last year met representatives of international media organisations posted in India, is expected to deliver a keynote address that will be followed by a free-flowing conversation, they said.

India: UP govt allots Rs 2,000 cr for Jewar airport in budget

Noida (UP), Feb 18 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday allotted a fund of Rs 2,000 crore for the Jewar Airport in Gautam Buddh Nagar.

The announcement was made during the budget presentation by Finance Minister Suresh Khanna in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow.

India: Infrastructure push for Ayodhya in UP budget

Lucknow, Feb 18 (PTI) With an aim to develop Ayodhya as a tourist attraction, the Uttar Pradesh government in its budget for 2020-21 has made a special provision of Rs 500 crore for an airport in the city.

Apart from it, the state government will spend Rs 85 crore on the development of a high-class infrastructure in the pilgrim city.

India: Prashant Kishor questions Nitish Kumar's development in Bihar

Patna, Feb 18 (PTI) Election strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor on Tuesday questioned the Nitish Kumar government's development model, even as he sneered at the chief minister for making ideological compromises to stay in an alliance with the BJP.

Kishor, who has been vocal about his opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), said Kumar needs to spell out whether he is with the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi or those who support Nathu Ram Godse.

India: Water quality improves in Ganga river as tests show

Kanpur:  As tanneries' owners were served with a notice to keep its units closed from February 19 till further notice, the good news in regard to the Ganga river remains quite optimistic. The testing has apparently demonstrated an increase of oxygen level into the river water thereby making it suitable for a ritual dip or sip.

Declaring the samples taken by a team of experts at different spots straight between Ghat and Jajmau bridge, the regional pollution control board officials have said that river water quality was improved amply.
