India: Himalayan glaciers melting twice as fast, 2019 study found

New Delhi, Feb 7 (PTI) Melting of Himalayan glaciers has doubled since the start of the 21st century due to rising temperatures, losing over a vertical foot and half of ice each year and potentially threatening water supply for hundreds of millions of people in countries, including India, according to a study published in 2019.

The analysis, spanning 40 years of satellite observations across India, China, Nepal and Bhutan, indicates that climate change is eating the Himalayan glaciers, researchers said.

India: Wide road reduces narrower on market day in Jajmau

India: Massive flood as glacier breaks off at Joshimath, 150 labourers missing

Dehradun/New Delhi, Feb 7 (PTI) A glacier broke off at Joshimath in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Sunday, leading to a massive flood in the Dhauli Ganga river and causing large-scale devastation in the upper reaches of the ecologically fragile Himalayas.

More than 150 labourers working in a power project are missing, officials said.

India: UP court orders police to file FIR against man accused of raping girl

Chitrakoot (UP), Feb 6 (PTI) Following the directives of a court here, police have registered a case against a 30-year-old man for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl, officials said on Saturday.

Bharatkoop Station House Officer (SHO) Sanjay Upadhyay said the case was registered on Friday, following the orders of Additional District Judge Pradeep Mishra on Thursday.

Citing the charge sheet, the SHO said the girl had gone to attend nature's call late on January 24, when the accused flashed a country-made pistol, dragged her to a field and raped her.

India: Punjab & Sind Bank loss zooms to Rs 2,375 cr in Q3

New Delhi, Feb 6 (PTI) Punjab & Sind Bank on Saturday said its net loss in December quarter 2020-21 spiralled to Rs 2,375.53 crore on higher provisions for bad loans.

The lender had posted a net loss of Rs 255.49 crore in the same period a year ago. In September quarter also, the bank had a loss of Rs 401.27 crore.

India: Centre imposing cess, surcharges to deny states : Mitra

Kolkata, Feb 6 (PTI) West Bengal Finance minister Amit Mitra Saturday said the Centre is on a spree to impose cess and surcharges to deny the states from getting their share of revenues.

The Centre has increased cess and surcharges from eight to 16 per cent over and above the taxes so as not to share with the states, he told reporters here a day after the vote-on-account by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the state assembly.

India restores 4G mobile internet in Kashmir after 550 days

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — India ended an 18-month-long ban on high speed internet services on mobile devices in disputed Kashmir, where opposition to New Delhi has deepened after it revoked the region’s semi-autonomy.

The order late Friday lifted the ban on 4G mobile data services However, the order issued by the region’s home secretary, Shaleen Kabra, asked police officials to “closely monitor the impact of lifting of restrictions.”

India: New railway station can wane traffic load on Kanpur Central
