India: Deep Sidhu arrested in Jan 26 Red Fort incident

New Delhi, Feb 9 (PTI) Actor Deep Sidhu, who was wanted in connection with the Red Fort incident on Republic Day, has been arrested by the Delhi Police, officials said on Tuesday.

The arrest has been made by a team of Delhi Police's Special Cell, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell).

The police had announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to Sidhu's arrest.

India: Accomplice of pro-Khalistani arrested in UP

Lucknow, Feb 9 (PTI) A joint team of Punjab and UP police has arrested an accomplice of pro-Khalistan terrorists here, police said on Tuesday.

Jagdev Singh alias Jagga was arrested from Vikas Nagar area of the city on Monday, they said.

The accused is linked to pro-Khalistan terrorists Paramjit Singh Pammah and Maltani Singh, they said, adding, Paramjit is currently in the UK while Malatani is in Germany.

India: U'khand glacier disaster: Toll rises to 28, 170 missing, 30 trapped in tunnel

Joshimath/ Dehradun, Feb 9 (PTI) The death toll from the Uttarakhand glacier disaster rose to 28 with the recovery of two more bodies, even as a multi-agency operation to rescue around 30 workers feared trapped inside a swamped tunnel at the Tapovan power project in Chamoli district continued on Tuesday, officials said.

Around 170 people are still missing after the Sunday's disaster apparently caused by a glacier burst, according to the latest data.

India’s COVID-19 Tally Rises To 10,838,194, Death Toll Over 155,000

NEW DELHI, Feb 8 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 10,838,194 today, even as 11,831 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 155,080, as 84 patients died since yesterday morning. This was the third consecutive day, when the death toll in a single day was below 100.

There are still 148,609 active cases in the country, while 10,534,505 have been discharged so far, from hospitals after medical treatment.

India: Minor girl raped in Uttar Pradesh

Shahjahanpur (UP), Feb 8 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth of her village when she had gone to answer nature's call, police said on Monday.

Circle Officer of Puwaya, Mahendra Pal, on Monday said that the girl, a resident of a village under the Nigohi police station, on February 4 had gone to relieve herself when the youth of the same village grabbed her, took her to a secluded place and allegedly raped her.

India: BSP leader kills himself at tehsil office in UP

Budaun (UP), Feb 7 (PTI) A 40-year-old Bahujan Samaj Party leader killed himself by consuming a poisonous substance at a tehsil office in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district after he was allegedly harassed by the SDM and a revenue official over a land allotment issue, police said on Sunday.

Harveer Singh (40) had consumed celphos tablets on Saturday at the Sahaswan tehsil office. He died at a hospital, they said.

India: Mizoram churches reopen after over 10 months

Aizawl, Feb 7 (PTI) Churches in Mizoram reopened on Sunday after a gap of over 10 months.

The government has allowed churches to reopen with only 50 per cent seating capacity and permitted church services only during the daytime on every Saturday and Sunday.

The decision to reopen the places of worship in the Christian-majority state was taken following a dip in COVID-19 cases.

The religious institutions were shut since March 22 last year after the COVID-19 outbreak.

Democratic space shrinking in India: Gaurav Gogoi

Guwahati, Feb 7 (PTI) Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Assam, Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday said people are being harassed by various agencies for criticising the government, leading to the shrinking of democratic space in the country.

Addressing a press conference here, Gogoi accused the Narendra Modi government of threatening all forms of democractic protests in the country and trying to silence peaceful dissent.

India: No 'ghar wapsi' (returning home) till farmers' demands are met: Tikait

Charkhi Dadri (Har), Feb 7 (PTI) Asserting that the agitation against the Centre's farm laws is a people's movement that will not fail, Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait on Sunday said there will be no "ghar wapsi" till protesting farmers' demands are met.

Tikait lauded the role of "khap panchayats" (caste councils) and their leaders in supporting the farmers' stir.

India asks Twitter to remove 1,178 accounts: government sources

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India has asked Twitter Inc to take down 1,178 accounts the country says are backed by arch rival Pakistan or operated by sympathizers of a separatist Sikh movement, two technology ministry sources said on Monday.

India’s security agencies said some of the accounts were being operated from outside of the country, one of the sources said, declining to be named as the order is not public. The order also involved the Twitter accounts of some supporters of the movement for an independent Sikh homeland called Khalistan.
