India: Bollywood actor Sonakshi Sinha recites poem in support of farmers

Mumbai, Feb 11 (PTI) Doubling down on her support to the farmers protesting against the three agri laws passed by the Centre, actor Sonakshi Sinha has narrated a heartfelt poem, described as a "tribute to the hands that feed us".

The 33-year-old actor, who first expressed solidarity with the farmers last week, shared a video on Instagram on Wednesday evening to share her thoughts about the protesting farmers.

2,072 Indians died of coronavirus infection abroad: Govt

New Delhi, Feb 11 (PTI) A total of 2,072 Indians died due to the coronavirus in various countries with the highest death toll of 906 being reported in Saudi Arabia followed by 375 in the United Arab Emirates, the government said on Thursday.

Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said 369 Indians died of coronavirus infection in Kuwait while 166 deaths were reported from Oman.

India: BJP running fake news factory on social media: Patole

Mumbai, Feb 11 (PTI) Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Thursday accused the BJP of running a "fake news factory" on social media and said his party will demolish the same by highlighting facts.

The BJP hit back at the Congress saying that since the latter has not done any good work, it has nothing to showcase on social media.

Patole said the BJP was using social media to spread misinformation and create a divide in the society, and added that his party will give a fitting reply to such attempts.

India: Kharge to be Leader of Opposition in RS: Cong sources

New Delhi, Feb 12 PTI) Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge is likely to replace Ghulam Nabi Azad as the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the party has written to the chairman of the Upper House of Parliament in this regard, sources said.

The Congress has written to Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu for appointing Kharge to the post of leader of opposition after Azad's retirement, they added.

India: Glacier break, Rescue teams battle on in Tapovan tunnel

Tapovan (U'khand), Feb 12 (PTI) Rescue teams battled on against various odds for the sixth consecutive day on Friday to get to the over 30 people trapped inside the sludge-choked Tapovan tunnel amid fading hopes of their survival.

Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar, in Dehradun, said sludge clearing and drilling operations are simultaneously underway at the tunnel to reach the smaller tunnel underneath where they may be trapped.

India: Assam man gets death for rape, murder of 5-year-old

Guwahati, Feb 10 (PTI) A court in Assam's Hojai district on Wednesday sentenced a man to death for raping and murdering a 5-year-old girl last year.

Additional District and Sessions Judge N Senabai convicted Chandan Harijan of raping and murdering the minor girl under the IPC and Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the convict, which would be paid to the victims family as compensation.

Indian PM should take COVID vaccine shot in public: LS member

New Delhi, Feb 10 (PTI) DMK member Dayanidhi Maran on Wednesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take a COVID vaccine shot in public as such a move will give confidence to people since many are not trusting the vaccine.

Participating in the discussion on Union Budget 2021-22 in Lok Sabha, he also said that apart from the prime minister, President, home minister and defence minister should take the vaccine shots in public.

India: Naxals torch four vehicles in Chhattisgarh

Dantewada, Feb 10 (PTI) Naxals have set on fire four vehicles engaged in a railway project in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night between Bacheli and Nareli villages, said district superintendent of police Abhishek Pallava.

"The work for doubling of a railways track was going on in the area when around 20 armed naxals, suspected to be from the Bhairamgarh area committee, arrived at the site and set the four vehicles on fire," he said.

India: Punjabi singer Babbu Maan meets farmers at Ghazipur

Ghaziabad, Feb 10 (PTI) Punjabi singer Babbu Maan reached the Ghazipur protest site on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border on Wednesday, met the farmers and extended support to their protest against the contentious agriculture laws.

Maan, who has earlier supported the farmers protest through his posts on social media, said he was ready to debate with Bollywood artists who think the movement was wrong.
