India: Major Port Authorities Bill introduced in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Feb 10 (PTI) A bill that seeks to provide greater autonomy in decision-making to 12 major ports in the country and professionalise their governance by setting up boards was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

The Major Port Authorities Bill, 2020, seeks to repeal the Major Port Trusts Act of 1963. It has already been passed by the Lok Sabha last year.

Indian police arrest man suspected of leading farm protest violence

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Police in the Indian capital arrested a man on Tuesday accused of leading a group of farmers who clashed with police and stormed the historic Red Fort last month during the worst day of violence in months of protests against agriculture reforms.

Tens of thousands of farmers have been camping out on main highways on the outskirts of New Deli for more than two months in a bid to force the government to withdraw new agricultural laws they say benefit private buyers at the expense of growers.

JOSHIMATH, India (AP) — Hundreds of rescue workers were scouring muck-filled ravines and valleys in northern India on Tuesday looking for survivors after part of a Himalayan glacier broke off, unleashing a devastating flood that has left at least 31 people dead and 165 missing.

NEW DELHI (AP) — When Ravi Chopra saw the devastating deluge of water and debris crash downstream from a Himalayan glacier on Sunday, his first thought was that this was exactly the scenario that his team had warned the Indian government of in 2014.

At least 31 people have died, 165 people are missing many more are feared to have died. The deluge first smashed into a small dam, gathering more energy as it grew heavier from the debris it collected along the way. Then, it smashed into a larger, under-construction dam and gathered even more energy.

India: 10-yr-old girl found dead in UP's Banda, rape suspectd

Banda (UP), Feb 8 (PTI) A 10-year-old girl was found dead here with her family suspecting rape, police said on Monday.

Police said it seems the girl was strangled and the body was found from a field on Sunday night.

Area SHO Bhaskar Mishra said the girl had gone to the fields to get some fodder for cattle when the incident took place.

As she did not return till late in the night, her family members started searching for her, and found her body in the fields. Prima facie, it seems she was strangled."

India: Former BJP leader joins JKAP in Jammu

Jammu, Feb 8 (PTI) Former state vice president of BJP Danish Iqbal joined the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) here on Monday, a party spokesperson said.

Iqbal, who contested the recent District Development council (DDC) elections as an independent candidate from Banihal, was welcomed into the party fold along with many of his supporters by former minister Mohammad Dilawar Mir, the spokesperson said.

Iqbal said he and his supporters have joined the Apni Party with great hope that it will address their problems in the backward area.

Indian PM's speech full of untruths: Yechury

New Delhi, Feb 8 (PTI) CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury Monday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his speech in Parliament and alleged it was full of "untruths".

"PM's speech is full of untruths. We have all along sought agri reforms for strengthening Indian agri, ensuring food security with healthy remuneration to farmers. NOT for destroying Indian agri & annihilation of farmers, all to benefit crony corporates. Repeal three black laws," he said in a tweet.

India: BJP legislatures uproar in Lok Sabha over MP Mahua Moitra's remarks

New Delhi, Feb 8 (PTI) Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra's critical reference to a former chief justice of India created uproar in Lok Sabha on Monday, with treasury members accusing her of violating parliamentary rules and demanding that her remarks be expunged.

RSP MP N K Premachandran, who was in the Chair, said her remarks will be expunged if found objectionable.

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal termed her comments against the former CJI, who was not named, as "shameful".

India: Tweet in favour of protesting farmers: AAP to Tendulkar

Mumbai, Feb 8 (PTI) AAP leader Preeti Sharma Menon has written a letter to cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar asking him to tweet in favour of protesting farmers as demanded by a young man who reportedly protested outside the former India captains residence here on Monday.

Sharma Menon said the man, Ranjeet Bagal, came all the way from Pandharpur in Solapur district, around 400km from Mumbai, to request Tendulkar to put out at least one tweet in support of the farmers protesting against the Centre's new agriculture laws near Delhi for more than two months now.
