India: Locals enjoy sunny weather after recent rains in Kanpur

Kanpur: The weather was sunny and bearable in the afternoon on Saturday. Though the maximum temperature was not too low and the cloud cover high on the sky was zero. The sunshine gave a good amount of heat in much colder weather.

Current weather recorded at 4 pm on Saturday remained at 22° Celsius. There was nothing that approved of clouds swimming in the sky. Sunshine was sufficient to provide energy to the residents.

The morning was not devoid of icy cold as the minimum temperature of the day was recorded at 10 degrees Celsius.

India: Nana Patole appointed Maharashtra Congress president

New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI) The Congress on Friday appointed Nana Patole as the party's Maharashtra state committee president, replacing Balasaheb Thorat.

Patole, the MLA from Sakoli in Bhandara district, had resigned as Speaker of Maharashtra Assembly on Thursday.

"The Congress president has appointed Nana Patole as the new president of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee," according to a party statement.

Indo-US combat drill kicks off in Rajasthan next week

New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI) Troops from the Indian and the US armies will carry out war-fighting drills in a combined operational environment and exchange expertise on conventional, unconventional and hybrid threats at a two-week exercise in Rajasthan beginning Monday.

The 'Yudh Abhyas' exercise is taking place at a time both the countries have renewed their resolve to further expand strategic and defence cooperation to effectively deal with common challenges including China's aggressive military posturing in the Indo-Pacific region.

India: TN govt announces Rs 12,110 crore farm loan waiver

Chennai, Feb 5 (PTI) A few months ahead of Assembly elections, the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu on Friday announced waiver of Rs 12,110 crore crop loans availed by 16.43 lakh farmers from cooperative banks.

Making the announcement in the state assembly, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said the scheme would come into immediate effect and a Government Order shall be issued while the required financial allocation would be made in the interim budget.

India: Langars, hookah keep farm protest going at Ghazipur

Ghazipur, Feb 5 (PTI) Young men served and relished community meals while the older folks huddled in groups sharing hookah, all of them soaking in the afternoon sun on Friday at the Ghazipur site on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh highway, where they have been protesting the Centre's new agri laws.

Small groups of women too were in attendance at the demonstration, predominantly a show of strength by men pitched here since November, demanding the repeal of the Centre repeal new agri laws enacted last September.

India: Indore girl wants permission to study law at age 13

Indore, Feb 5 (PTI) Indore Lok Sabha MP Shankar Lalwani said on Friday that he has requested the Union education minister to allow a 13-year-old girl from the city to enrol in a five-year law course despite the age bar.

Tanishka Sujeet cleared her Class 10 exam in 2019 and class 12 exam next year. She wants admission to integrated BA-LLB course, but officials of Devi Ahilyabai Vishwa Vidyalaya said they could not admit her as the minimum age for admission to law course is 18, claimed her mother Anubha.

India: Forgetfulness takes children into its strange grasp

Kanpur: Whatever it may be, there is no certainty of anything. We think of the children falling ill owing to different reasons. Nobody can guess that a little girl could have a symptom of forgetfulness. Among three children one has been observed enduring the Alzheimer's, according to rough calculations. 

It was realised when those three children came to tuition class one five-year-old girl suddenly found her school bag was not on her back. She also learnt she had no book holding by her one hand.

India: 'Chakka jam': Farmers in Punjab, Haryana block roads

Chandigarh, Feb 6 (PTI) Farmers protesting against the Centre's new agri laws and other issues blocked roads at several places in Punjab and Haryana on Saturday on the call given by the farmers' unions for a nationwide 'chakka jam'.

Farmers' unions had on Monday announced a countrywide 'chakka jam' from 12 noon to 3 pm on February 6 when they would block national and state highways in protest against the Internet ban in areas near their agitation sites, harassment allegedly meted out to them by authorities, and other issues.

Indian protests against agriculture reforms attract new supporters

BHAINSWAL, India (Reuters) - Thousands of farmers in a politically important Indian state on Friday rallied in opposition to new agricultural laws, signalling growing support for a months-long campaign to have the government reforms scrapped.

Angry at what they see as legislation that benefits private buyers at the expense of growers, tens of thousands of farmers have been camped on the outskirts of the capital, New Delhi, for more than two months, calling for the withdrawal of laws introduced in September.
