India: RBI maintains status quo for fourth time in a row; keeps key rate at 4%

Mumbai, Feb 5 (PTI) The RBI on Friday decided to leave the benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4 per cent but maintained an accommodative stance, implying rate cuts in future if need arises to support the economy hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Reserve Bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted unanimously to leave the repo rate unchanged at 4 per cent, Governor Shaktikanta Das said while announcing the decisions taken by the panel.

S-400 shipment to India proceeds according to schedule

BANGALORE, February 4. /TASS/: The contract on shipment of the S-400 Triumf missile air defense systems to India proceeds according to the schedule, Rosoboronexport told TASS during the Aero India 2021 expo.

"The contract is being fulfilled in accordance with the negotiated timeframe," the company said.

India: IPS officer Praveen Sinha given additional charge of CBI

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) Senior IPS officer Praveen Sinha has been given the additional charge of the CBI director, an order issued by the Personnel Ministry on Wednesday stated.

Sinha, a 1988 batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre, is the Additional Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved that Sinha shall look after the duties of CBI director with immediate effect, the order said.

CBI chief Rishi Kumar Shukla completed his two-year term on Wednesday.

India: PM Modi's brother stages dharna at Lucknow airport

Lucknow, Feb 3 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi's brother Prahlad Modi staged a dharna at the Lucknow airport on Wednesday, alleging that police did not let his supporters reach there.

According to Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport's Additional General Manager (Operations) Bhupendra Singh, Prahlad Modi arrived at Lucknow by an Indigo flight around 4 pm.

He sat on a dharna on the airport premises as he was unhappy over police stopping his supporters from reaching there, Singh said, adding that Prahlad Modi left after an hour and a half.

India: Advocates launch helpline for protesting farmers

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) As protesting farmers face legal challenges emerging out of the tractor parade violence on Republic Day, some lawyer groups have come forward to offer legal assistance to them and have started helpline numbers.

Simranjeet Kaur Gill, an advocate at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, said they are helping those who are in jail or have gone "missing" since the violent protests on Janury 26.

India: Air cargo demand fell 10.6 pc in 2020

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) Global airlines' grouping IATA on Wednesday said that 2020 was the worst year for air cargo demand which declined by 10.6 per cent even though the segment is "surviving the crisis in better shape than the passenger side of the business".

"This was the largest drop in year-on-year demand since IATA started to monitor cargo performance in 1990, outpacing the 6 per cent fall in global trade in goods," the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said in a release.

India: TMC-BJP in war of words over defections

Alipurduar/Hooghly (WB), Feb 3 (PTI) The TMC and the BJP hit out at each other on Wednesday in poll-bound West Bengal over defections with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee saying it was ironical that the Centre did not have funds to bear the travel expenses of migrant workers but corrupt leaders were flown to Delhi in a chartered plane.

Newly inducted BJP leader Rajib Banerjee, who quit TMC and was among those who took the chartered flight, slammed her for levelling allegations of corruption against him.

India: AAP files police complaint against Sambit Patra

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) The AAP on Wednesday filed an official complaint with the Delhi Police against BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra for allegedly posting a doctored video of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

In the complaint, AAP demanded action against Patra under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

7,139 Indian prisoners lodged in foreign jails: MEA

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) A total of 7,139 Indian prisoners, including undertrials, are lodged in various jails around the world, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday

Saudi Arabia has the highest number of 1,599 Indian prisoners, followed by the United Arab Emirates with 898 and Nepal having 886 inmates, according to information provided by Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan in Rajya Sabha.
