India: Tarun Gogoi condemns arrest of activists Pinjra Tod activists in Delhi

Guwahati, May 25 (PTI) Veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi on Monday condemned the arrest of two Pinjra Tod activists by Delhi Police for anti-CAA protests in the national capital and termed it as "political vendetta".

Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita were members of Pinjra Tod, a collective of women students and alumni of colleges across Delhi. They were arrested on Saturday in connection with a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Jaffrabad area in February.

India: 2 Pinjra Tod women activists sent to police custody after getting bail in separate case

New Delhi, May 24 (PTI) Two Pinjra Tod women activists, who were granted bail on Sunday in a case related to the northeast Delhi communal violence, were sent to two days of police custody moments later in a separate murder case linked to the riots.

When Metropolitan Magistrate Ajeet Narayan granted bail to Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita in a rioting case, a Delhi Police crime branch investigating officer moved an application for their interrogation and arrest in a separate case of alleged murder of a local during the riots.

India: Hindutva radicals vandalise church film set in front of temple

Kochi/Thiruvananthapuram, May 25 (PTI): Members of a right wing group allegedly vandalised the film set of a Malayalam movie near here on Sunday, prompting a sharp reaction from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who warned the culprits of strong action.

Expressing anguish over the attack, actor Tovino Thomas, who is starring in the film, said the "contractual set" of film "Minnal Murali" was destroyed by a group of "racialists".

Ludicrous lawsuits against China over COVID-19 totally groundless: FM

BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The frivolous lawsuits against China over COVID-19 are shoddy ones, as they have zero basis in fact, law or international precedence, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Sunday.

Wang made the remarks at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual national legislative session.

COVID-19 has caught the whole world by surprise and China is a victim like other countries, he said.

India: 2 women arrested for Jafrabad sit-in in Feb

New Delhi, May 23 (PTI) Delhi police on Saturday arrested two women in connection with a protest in Jafrabad area in February, officials said.

Natasha and Devangana belong to Pinjra Tod (Break the Cage) group, a collective of women students and alumni of colleges from across Delhi that seeks to make regulations for hostel and paying guest (PG) accommodation less restrictive for women students.

India: It was wrong to impose lockdown suddenly: Thackeray

Mumbai, May 24 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said it was wrong to impose the lockdown suddenly and now it cannot be lifted all at once.

Amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, Thackeray also said there was a need to be extra cautious during the upcoming monsoon.

It was wrong to impose the lockdown suddenly. It will be equally wrong to lift it in one go. It will be a double whammy for our own people," he said in a televised message.

India: UP govt invokes ESMA for 6 months

Lucknow, May 22 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) banning strikes in all departments and corporations under it for a period of six months.

The ESMA, as it is commonly known, gives the police right to arrest without a warrant anybody violating the Act's provisions. It has been invoked after taking permission from Governor Anandiben Patel and a notification in this regard has been issued by Mukul Singhal, Additional Chief Secretary, a senior official said on Friday.

Iran’s Top Leader Calls For “Resistance” Against Israel’s Pressure On Occupied Palestinian Territories

TEHRAN, May 23 (NNN-IRNA) – Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Friday, called for “resistance” against Israeli pressures on occupied Palestinian territories, according to the leader’s official website.

“My main advice is to continue this struggle” against occupation, and to better organise the resistant groups inside Palestinian territories, Khamenei said, on the occasion of the International Quds (Jerusalem) Day.

He added, Iran will not hesitate in its duty to assist the Palestinians.

23 May 2020; AFP: Brazilians got a shocking look Friday at an expletive-laced meeting between President Jair Bolsonaro and his cabinet when a Supreme Court judge released a video at the center of an investigation targeting the far-right leader.

The April 22 cabinet meeting is under scrutiny by prosecutors probing allegations by former justice minister Sergio Moro that Bolsonaro tried to interfere in federal police investigations.
