Minneapolis police face civil rights probe over Floyd death

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The state of Minnesota on Tuesday launched a civil rights investigation of the Minneapolis Police Department in hopes of forcing widespread changes following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white officer pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for minutes, even after he stopped moving.

USA: No place for hate, racism in society: Satya Nadella

Washington, Jun 2 (PTI) There is no place for hate and racism in the society, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has said, asserting that empathy and shared understanding are a start, but more needs to be done.

Nadella's remarks come in the wake of the custodial death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man who was pinned to the ground in Minneapolis on May 25 by a white police officer who kneeled on his neck as he gasped for breath.

India: Special MP-MLA court denies bail to UP Cong chief

Lucknow, Jun 1 (PTI) A special MP-MLA court on Monday rejected the bail plea of Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajai Kumar Lallu, arrested on charges of alleged forgery of documents of buses arranged by his party for ferrying stranded migrant labourers during the coronavirus lockdown.

He has been jailed since May 21.

Judge P K Rai said Lallu was not entitled for bail at this stage as the offence was serious in nature and a probe is going on.

US unrest: PM Morrison calls for probe into police ‘assault’ on Australian journalist

CANBERRA/WASHINGTON, June 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — PM Scott Morrison has spoken to US President Donal Trump after an Australian TV crew was allegedly assaulted by police in Washington, reports say.

Morrison has also asked the Washington embassy to investigate the incident.

Channel 7’s US correspondent Amelia Brace and cameraman Tim Myers were attacked while covering Monday’s protest outside the White House.

Libya vows to expose perpetrators to justice over Bangladeshi killing

DHAKA, June 2 (NNN-BSS) – The UN-recognised Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) has pledged Bangladesh that it would expose the perpetrators involved in the killing of 26 Bangladeshi nationals there.

The Libyan foreign ministry made the vow while strongly condemning the killing by sending a condolence message to Dhaka, a Bangladesh foreign ministry press release said.

US unrest: Former African presidents condemn Floyd killing

COTONOU, June 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Former African presidents have condemned the killing of George Floyd as violent protests continue in the US following his death in police custody.

The Forum of Former Heads of State and Government has urged African countries to “raise a strong protest” to the killing and demand that the “perpetrators of this crime and all other crimes of this sort be punished in the strongest terms”, according to a statement released by former Beninese President Nicéphore Soglo.

USA: George Floyd death homicide, official post-mortem declares

MINNEAPOLIS (Minnesota, US), June 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The death of George Floyd, an African-American man who died in police custody, has been declared a homicide following an official post-mortem.

He suffered a cardiac arrest while being restrained by Minneapolis police officers on May 25, the report found.

It listed Floyd’s cause of death as “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression”.

The examination also recorded evidence of heart disease and recent drug use.

Palestine Accuses Israel Of Paralysing Industrial Zone For Palestinians In East Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, June 2 (NNN-WAFA) – Palestine accused Israel of attempting to take over the only industrial zone for Palestinians in East Jerusalem, after Israeli authorities ordered the demolition and eviction of nearly 200 private establishments in the area.

The Israeli authorities’ demolition orders in Wadi al-Joz neighbourhood of East Jerusalem will paralyse the only area where Palestinians own car repair workshops and commercial enterprises, said the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement.
