Amnesty International stops its operations in India, blames harassment by Indian Gov

Delhi; 29 Sep 2020 (UMMN): Amnesty International has stopped its Indian operation citing freezing of its bank account by the Government of India.

Amnesty International, a London based non-governmental human rights organisation, with millions of members and supporters around the world, said its bank accounts have been frozen forcing it to lay off staff in the country, and suspend all its campaign and research work.

US congresswoman withdraws from Yitzhak Rabin memorial

28 Sep 2020; MEMO: New York Democratic Congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), on Friday cancelled her participation in an event commemorating the life of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

An AOC spokeswoman said Ocasio-Cortez would not attend the event, organised by Americans for Peace Now (APN) and which is scheduled to take place in October.

India: Hathras Dalit rape survivor shifted to AIIMS, Delhi

Aligarh (UP), Sep 28 (PTI) The 19-year-old Dalit woman, who was raped by four men in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district, was shifted to AIIMS, Delhi on Monday after her condition showed no signs of improvement.

The woman was gangraped a fortnight ago, following which she was admitted to the AMU's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital.

India: MP DGP Purushottam Sharma seen thrashing his wife; NCW seeks action

New Delhi, Sep 28 (PTI) NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan on Monday, demanding strict action against the senior police officer who is seen beating and abusing his wife in a purported video.

In the video, Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (Prosecution) Purushottam Sharma is seen thrashing his wife, while the latter is seen resisting the assault.

It is further reported that this incident took place after the official's wife found out about his alleged extra-marital affair.

Netanyahu orders construction of 5,000 new settlement units in West Bank

26 Sep 2020; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the construction of 5,000 new settlement units in an Israeli Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, Israeli media reported on Friday.

According to the news website of Israeli TV Channel 7, Netanyahu has called for the Israeli High Council of Planning and Building to be convened in the West Bank after the Jewish holidays.

US continues to reinforce military bases in Syria

26 Sep 2020; MEMO: The US Army has sent 70 trucks to Syria through the Al-Waleed border crossing with Iraq, local sources said Friday, Anadolu Agency reports.

The convoy, including 12 armoured vehicles, trucks with essential supplies, and several fuel tankers, went to US bases in Syria’s Hasakah, Raqqa and Deir Ez-Zour provinces on Thursday, according to the sources, who requested anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

India: Woman accuses father of raping her for 10 yrs

Kota (Raj) Sep 25 (PTI) A 23-year-old woman here has accused her father of repeatedly raping her for the last 10 years, police said on Friday.

In a complaint to Bhemganjmandi police station sent by post on Thursday, the woman has accused the father, an employee with the Indian Railways, of repeatedly raping her at home and at places where he was posted, they said.

She also has alleged that her father attempted to sexually harass her younger sister on a number of occasions, a police official said.
