India: UP Cong chief put under house arrest for protesting about raped dalit woman

Lucknow, Oct 3 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu on Saturday said he had been put under house arrest in order to "stop" him from going to Hathras and fight for justice for the Dalit woman who died after she was assaulted and allegedly gang-raped.

Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi alleged that the step had been taken to prevent Lallu from joining party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who are again headed towards Hathras in another effort to meet the family of the victim.

Pompeo, Vatican clash over China after tensions spill out

Rome, Oct 2 (AP/PTI) The US and the Vatican butted heads over China on Thursday as the Holy See chafed at US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's public call to take a harsher stance against Chinese restrictions on religious freedom.

The State Department sought to play down the differences, but tensions were palpable during Pompeo's two-day visit to Rome.

India: Two arrested for rape, murder of two-year-old girl in MP

Jabalpur (MP), Oct 1 (PTI)Two men were arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping and killing a two-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur district, the police said.

The incident had taken place last month near Shahpura village, 45 km from here.

Sonu Thakur alias Sonu Gond (21) and Shubham Mallah (20) were arrested for kidnapping, raping and killing the girl, said district superintendent of police S Bahuguna.

India: Dismiss Yogi Adityanath government, demands Cong leader

Nagpur, Oct 1 (PTI) Congress leader and Maharashtra minister Nitin Raut on Thursday demanded dismissal of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh over the alleged gang-rape and death of a Dalit woman in Hathras.

Talking to PTI here, Raut, who is also chairperson of the AlCC SC department, said atrocities against Dalits and women have increased "considerably" ever since the BJP came to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017.

He condemned the detention of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra by the UP police.

Eyewitnesses say police shot Awais Al-Rawi in the head in front of his family after troops and armoured vehicles descended on his village. This came moments after Al-Rawi stood up to an officer who had insulted and slapped his father.

Protesters storm Beirut bank, demand return of savings

30 Sep 2020; MEMO: Protesters stormed a bank in the Downtown district of Beirut yesterday and staged a sit-in, demanding the institution return their savings which have been trapped since late last year, Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Hundreds of thousands of bank account holders have been unable to access their entire savings since November, when the country’s financial institutions imposed informal restrictions, limiting withdrawals to meagre weekly sums.

30 Sep 2020; MEMO: Kamel Jendoubi, chairman of the Group of Independent Eminent International and Regional Experts on Yemen, on Wednesday, submitted a third report on violations in Yemen to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Yemen Shabab reported.

The report was prepared by a team of experts tasked by the UNHRC to document human rights violations in the war-torn country.

India: Bhushan files fresh plea in SC seeking review of punishment in contempt case

New Delhi, Oct 1 (PTI) Activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan moved the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking review of the August 31 sentencing order to either pay nominal fine of Re 1 or face a three-month jail term and debarment from law practice for three years in the contempt case for his two tweets against the judiciary.

Bhushan, who has already deposited Re 1 as fine with the apex court's registry on September 14, has filed two separate review petitions in the contempt case.
