UN, African Union ask Sudan authorities to end political crisis

13 April 2022; MEMO: The UN, African Union (AU) and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) called on Tuesday for the Sudanese authorities to end the political crisis gripping the country, it has been reported.

According to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, the three asked the Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, to adopt measures which will create a suitable atmosphere for a serious dialogue to end the crisis.

Israel bans meetings between Sheikhs Ekrima Sabri and Raed Salah

13 April 2022; MEMO: Israel's occupation authorities have banned the Grand Sheikh of Al Aqsa Mosque, Ekrima Sabri, from meeting with Sheikh Raed Salah and seven other leading Arab Israeli activists for three months, Arab48.com reported on Tuesday. As well as Salah, the ban covers Sheikh Kamal Al-Khatib, Suleiman Aghbariyeh, Mohammed Amarah, Fawwaz Aghbariyeh, Salim Awawdeeh, Majdi Al-Khatib and Tamer Shalaatah.

Palestine: Students wounded in Israeli raid at university

Two Palestinian students were shot and wounded when a large number of Israeli occupation forces raided the campus of Palestine Technical University — Kadoorie in the occupied West Bank city of Tulkarem on Tuesday, Quds Press has reported.

Wafa news agency added that the Israeli occupation forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the students while on campus. At least sixteen of the young people suffered breathing difficulties as a result.

Israel: Arab MK receives death threats over Jerusalem remarks

13 April 2022; MEMO: The Chairman of the Joint Arab List in the Israeli Knesset (parliament), Ayman Odeh MK, said yesterday that he had received "dozens" of death threats after visiting Jerusalem's Old City on Sunday and calling on Arabs serving in Israel's security forces to lay down their arms, Arab48.com has reported. Odeh pointed out that he is collecting the messages to present them to the Knesset Security Officials.

French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen ridiculed for remarks on hijab

13 April 2022; MEMO: Far-right French presidential candidate and leader of the National Rally Party, Marine Le Pen, has sparked a wave of criticism after she said the late Tunisian leader Habib Bourguiba banned the head scarf worn by Muslim women in Algeria.

Le Pen was a guest on France Inter radio yesterday when she vowed to completely abolish the hijab in France, noting that she would not be the first president to do so, "as Bourguiba had done so in Algeria".

US monitoring 'concerning' developments on human rights violations in India: Blinken

Washington, Apr 12 (PTI) The US is monitoring some recent "concerning developments" on human rights violations in India by some government, police, and prison officials, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said.

Blinken made these remarks at a joint news conference with Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and their Indian counterparts -- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh -- after the conclusion of the 2+2 Ministerial on Monday.

Indian gov nods to prosecute Amnesty International's Aakar Patel

New Delhi, Apr 12 (PTI) The Centre has given the go ahead to the CBI to prosecute Amnesty International India and its former chief Aakar Patel for alleged violations of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), paving way for a special court to take cognisance of its charge sheet filed on December 31, 2021, officials said on Tuesday.

The CBI had sought the sanction of the government to prosecute the international human rights organisation because of mandatory clause of Section 40 of the FCRA
