India: Cutting of trees & pollution restrict rains in Kanpur

Kanpur 22 July 2022; If the rains have occurred in different parts of the country, why do no rains happen in the city of Kanpur?

The people are yet to be gratified with the boon of rains even after the last week of July in their areas.

Whatever rains have occurred so far are not bringing the intensity of humidity down. They insist upon saying that barely short drizzles have so far come in their fortune.

Japan removes Pakistan from COVID-19 red list

ISLAMABAD, Jul 21 (APP): Japan has removed Pakistan from the category of red-listed countries in relation to  COVID-19. 

“As a result of the efforts of the embassy of Pakistan, Tokyo, the government of Japan has removed Pakistan from the category of red-listed countries in relation to COVID-19,” a statement of the Pakistan embassy in Tokyo said. 

The new categorization will come into effect from July 27 onwards.

The precautionary measures against COVID-19 will remain in place. 

Sri Lanka to hold swear-in ceremony for new cabinet ministers on Friday

COLOMBO, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's new cabinet of ministers are scheduled to be sworn in on Friday at the Prime Minister's Office.

Issuing a statement, the President's Media Division said that the ceremony will start from 9 a.m. in the day.

Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as president of Sri Lanka on Thursday in parliament before Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.

Wickremesinghe was elected as president in an election held in parliament on Wednesday.

Ethnic minority woman wins India’s presidential election

NEW DELHI (AP) — A woman who hails from a minority ethnic community was chosen Thursday as India’s new president, a largely ceremonial position.

Droupadi Murmu, a leader from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, was elected by the Indian Parliament and state legislatures in voting held Monday, making her the first president from one of the country’s tribes and the second-ever woman to hold the position.

She will be formally sworn in as the president on Monday.

Pakistan extends condolences on loss of lives in Egypt's tragic road accident

ISLAMABAD, July 20 (Xinhua) -- The government and people of Pakistan extended heartfelt condolences to the Egyptian government and people on the loss of lives and injuries to many in a tragic road accident in southern Egypt, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said.

"We express the deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

Ranil Wickremesinghe elected as new president of Sri Lanka, calling for unity amid crisis

COLOMBO, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected as the new president of Sri Lanka in an election held in parliament on Wednesday.

Soon after winning the election, Wickremesinghe addressed the parliament, calling on all legislators including the opposition parliamentarians to unite and work together with him to lead Sri Lanka out of the current economic crisis.

"We are at a critical juncture. There is an economic crisis and the youth want a system change. People want all parliamentarians to come together," said Wickremesinghe.

UN slams killings, rights abuses under Afghanistan’s Taliban

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Hundreds of people have been killed in Afghanistan since the Taliban overran the country nearly a year ago, even though security on the whole has improved since then, the United Nations said in a report Wednesday.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan also highlighted the poor situation of women and girls since the Taliban takeover and how they have been stripped of many of their human rights under Afghanistan’s current rulers.

7,500 trees to be planted across UK to celebrate 75 years of British Pakistanis’ achievements

ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP): Pakistan’s High Commission in London launched “The Legacy Project” to plant 7,500 trees across the UK and establish a welfare fund to celebrate the achievements of British Pakistanis during the last 75 years.

The Legacy Project was launched as a collaborative effort by the British Pakistan Foundation (BPF) in partnership with the National Trust, World Congress of Overseas Pakistanis (WCOP), The Pakistan Society, and a host of other British Pakistani organizations.

OIC secretary general, Pakistan’s permanent representative discuss cooperation

ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP): Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha on Tuesday received Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the OIC Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh and discussed the areas of mutual cooperation.

Held at the OIC headquarters in Jeddah, the meeting was a follow-up on the implementation of the resolutions adopted by the 48th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers held in Islamabad, on March 23, 2022.
