India: Shah holds all-party meet on COVID-19 situation in Delhi

New Delhi, Jul 15 (PTI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with the leaders of all political parties of Delhi on Monday to discuss about the novel coronavirus situation, officials said.

The meeting was held in the wake of rising novel coronavirus cases in Delhi.

Shah apprised the leaders of four major political parties of Delhi on the steps taken to check the coronavirus pandemic and sought their views on the issue, a Home Ministry official said.

India: IIT-KGP asks students, researchers to go home by June 20

Kolkata, Jun 14 (PTI) The authorities of the IIT Kharagpur has asked around 2,400 students and researchers who are still stuck in their hostels to leave for home by June 20.

Registrar B N Singh told PTI on Sunday that the institute wants the students back in the campus by September when the new semester will begin.

"Of the total 12,500 hostel boarders, 5,400 were there when the lockdown began in end-March. Another 3,000 were transported home last month and around 2,400 are presently staying in the campus," Singh said.

India: Migrant woman gives birth on way home in a truck

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jun 15 (PTI) A migrant woman gave birth to a boy in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district when she was on her way from Himachal Pradesh to her native place with her husband, an official said.

The woman was travelling with her husband on a truck to Badaun district when she complained to labour pain on the Khatima-Panipat highway near Miranpur town on Sunday evening, according to the official.

Jansath primary health centre incharge Ashok Kumar said Arti was rushed to the centre where she gave birth to the child.

India: 11,502 more COVID-19 cases, 325 deaths

New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI) India saw a jump of over 11,000 novel coronavirus cases for the third consecutive day on Monday, taking the total number of infections to over 3.32 lakh, while the toll rose to 9,520 with 325 more deaths, the Health Ministry said.

There are 1,53,106 active cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), while 1,69,797 people have recovered and a patient has migrated, according to the ministry data updated in the morning.

Therefore, 51.07 per cent of the patients have recovered so far, an official said.

India: Food prices rise, WPI inflation falls 3.21% in May

New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI) Wholesale prices in the country witnessed a deflation of 3.21 per cent in May due to sharp decline in prices of fuel and power, even as food articles turned expensive.

"The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly Wholesale Price Index (WPI), stood at (-) 3.21 per cent (provisional) for May 2020 as compared to 2.79 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year," the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement.

India: MP Guv Lalji Tandon still in ICU

Lucknow, Jun 15 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon continues to be in the ICU of a private hospital here, officials said on Monday.

"He is undergoing intensive treatment," Medanta Hospital Director Dr Rakesh Kapoor told PTI.

Tandon, 85, was admitted to the hospital on the morning of June 11 with breathing problems, difficulty in urination and fever.

On Sunday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the hospital and enquired about his health.

Indian Rupee settles 19 paise lower at 76.03 against US dollar

Mumbai, Jun 15 (PTI) The rupee depreciated 19 paise and closed below the 76 per dollar mark on Monday as weak domestic equities and sustained foreign fund outflows weighed on investor sentiment.

Forex traders said risk appetite has waned amid fresh cases of COVID-19 globally.

The rupee opened weak at 75.93 at the interbank forex market. It fell further and finally settled for the day at 76.03 against the US dollar, down 19 paise over its last close.

It had settled at 75.84 against the US dollar on Friday.

India: No plan for another lockdown in Delhi: Kejriwal

New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday that there was no plan for another lockdown in Delhi even as the number of novel coronavirus cases continue to spurt.

"Many people are speculating whether another lockdown in Delhi in being planned. There are no such plans," Kejriwal tweeted.

It comes a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah held meetings with Kejriwal, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and three mayors to discuss the strategy to deal with the COVID-19 situation.

India: Delhi coronavirus fears mount as hospital beds run out

14 June 2020; AFP: Ashwani Jain succumbed to the coronavirus in an ambulance as his family pleaded with several hospitals to take him in, the latest victim of the pandemic sweeping through the Indian capital and exposing a deadly shortage of hospital beds.

"They don't care whether we live or die," said his 20-year-old daughter Kashish, whose uncle, Abhishek, sat with Ashwani in the back of the vehicle on its desperate journey across Delhi.
