India: One more arrested for woman's rape in moving bus in UP

Noida (UP), Jun 18 (PTI) The Gautam Buddh Nagar police on Thursday arrested one more person in connection with the rape of a woman in a moving passenger bus, officials said.

The police had on Wednesday arrested one of the two accused drivers, while a search is on for two more persons in connection with the case, the officials said.

A 25-year-old woman who was travelling from Pratapgarh to Noida was allegedly raped at around 2 am on Wednesday in a privately-operated AC sleeper bus, according to the police.

India: Locusts attack crops, trees in Banda, Mahoba districts

Banda/Mahoba (UP), Jun 19 (PTI) A swarm of locusts attacked trees and crops in several villages in Banda and Mahoba districts, farmers and officials said on Friday.

The swarm came from the jungles of the neighbouring Panna and Chhatarpur districts of Madhya Pradesh and entered Kartal, Bolharka, Maharajpur, Manpur, Pukari, Ragoli and Babupur villages in Banda on Thursday evening, they said.

Farmers said the locusts attacked vegetables sown in one kilometre area in an hour and returned to the jungles in Madhya Pradesh.

India: Chennai deserted as 12-day lockdown kicks in

Chennai, Jun 19 (PTI) A 12-day lockdown without previous relaxations kicked in on Friday here and in a string of other localities in nearby three districts including Chengelpet with police deploying drones and intensifying patrols to check violations.

While arterial roads to neighbouhood streets were deserted, police placed barricades in key intersections and blocked free access to several main thoroughfares in the city and suburbs.

India's COVID-19 tally crosses 380,000 with highest single-day spike of 13,586 cases

New Delhi, June 19 (PTI) India on Friday saw another record spike of 13,586 new COVID-19 cases in a single-day, pushing the tally to 3,80,532, while the death toll rose to 12,573 with 336 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

In some positive news, the number of recoveries crossed the two lakh mark and stands at 2,04,710, while there are 1,63,248 total COVID-19 active cases, according to the updated official figure at 8 am.

One patient had migrated.

India seeks eased tensions with China after Himalayas clash

India plans extra tariffs, trade barriers on 300 imported products - sources

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India plans to impose higher trade barriers and raise import duties on around 300 products from China and elsewhere, two government officials said, as part of an effort to protect domestic businesses.

The plan has been under review since at least April, according to a government document seen by Reuters, and is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recently announced self-reliance campaign to promote local products.

Imphal, Jun 17 (PTI) Four National People's Party (NPP) ministers including Deputy Chief Minister Y JoyKumar Singh resigned from the BJP-led government in Manipur on Wednesday.

The other three who tendered their resignation letters are Tribal and Hills Area Development Minister N Kayishii, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Letpao Haokip and Health and Family Welfare Minister L Jayanta Kumar Singh.

Joykumar Singh also held the finance portfolio.

India: Woman raped in UP on moving bus by driver

Noida (UP), Jun 17 (PTI) A 25-year-old woman travelling with her children from Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh to Noida was allegedly raped on a moving bus by one its two drivers early on Wednesday, police said.

The accused is absconding, police said, adding that the other driver has been held for allegedly intimidating her.

According to police, the incident apparently took place on a stretch between Lucknow and Mathura.

India: Thousands bid tearful adieu to Col. Santosh Babu killed by Chinese troops

Suryapet (Telangana), Jun 18 (PTI): Amid chants of "Bharat mata ki jai", the mortal remains of Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, who was killed by Chinese troops during clashes, were consigned to flames with full military honours here on Thursday.

Thousands of people wearing masks chanting "Santosh Babu amar rahe" and "Vande Mataram" participated in the funeral procession even as scores, standing on balconies of their respective places showered flowers on the army vehicle which was carrying the body.
