India: BJP busy in elections, ignoring problem of unemployment: Akhilesh Yadav

Lucknow, Jun 10 (PTI) Linking rising unemployment to cases of suicide, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday charged that the BJP was busy focusing on elections and not interested in tackling the problem of joblessness.

There have been some cases of migrant labourers, who have returned to Uttar Pradesh from other states recently, committing suicide.

India: Locust swarms spotted in Pench reserve in Maharashtra

Nagpur, June 9 (PTI) Locust swarms descended in the Pench Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra on Tuesday, a forest official said.

The swarms flew in from the Koltimara area in the west and descended over Borban, Chor Bahuli, Silari and Pipriya forest areas in the east, said Field director of Pench Tiger Reserve Ravikiran Govekar.

The reserve is spread across the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

Delhi Police SI dies due to COVID-19

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) A 59-year-old sub-inspector of Delhi Police died on Tuesday due to coronavirus, officials said.

Earlier, one constables and two assistant sub-inspectors of Delhi police had died due to COVID-19.

Another constable, who had underlying health conditions and had been on leave since November last year, also died last week. Police said his test for COVID-19 also came positive.

The sub-inspector who died on Tuesday has been identified as Karambeer. He was posted in northeast district, they said.

India: Two IPS trainees test positive for COVID-19

Hyderabad, June 9 (PTI): Two IPS trainees have tested positive for COVID-19 and been quarantined at the city-based Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), a premier training institute of the country for the Indian Police Service officers, an official said on Tuesday.

The two were among the 131 IPS probationers of 71 Regular Recruits (RR) 2018 batch, who returned from District Practical Training (DPT), to the Academy.

India: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tests negative for COVID-19

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has tested negative for COVID-19, an official said on Tuesday.

The official said that the 51-year-old AAP supremo underwent the test for the novel coronavirus on Tuesday morning.

"The chief minister has tested negative for COVID-19," the official said.

Asked whether he would undergo a test again after some days, the official said, "There is no need for it."

Kejriwal had gone into self-quarantine on Sunday after he developed a sore throat and fever.

India: UP Cabinet passes ordinance to prevent cow slaughter

Lucknow, Jun 9 (PTI) To protect cows and prevent their slaughter, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday approved a draft ordinance, providing a maximum rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and a fine up to Rs 5 lakh.

For the first offence, a person can be given a rigorous punishment of one to seven years with a fine ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3 lakh.

For the second offence, the person can be given a 10-year rigorous imprisonment with a fine up to Rs 5 lakh, a statement said.

India: AIIMS nurses body calls off strike

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) The AIIMS Nurses' Union called off their nine-day protest over poor working conditions amid the COVID-19 crisis on Tuesday, stating that the administration has agreed to most of their demands.

Several healthcare workers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been infected by the disease with around 50 of them being nursing staff, sources said.

India: Maha CM stresses on decentralisation of new industries

Mumbai, Jun 10 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has stressed the need for decentralisation of new industries in the state in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak.

At a review meeting of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Corridor on Tuesday evening, Thackeray said separate zones of industries should be created along the corridor and all facilities required by units should be provided there.

The Samruddhi Corridor is a 701-km-long expressway being constructed to cut short the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur.

India: COVID-19 cases in Delhi cross 31,000-mark

New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) COVID-19 cases in the national capital breached the 31,000 mark on Tuesday with 1,366 fresh cases, while the death toll mounted to 905, according to the Delhi government's latest health bulletin.

The bulletin issued on Wednesday said there are 18,543 active cases, while 11,861 patients have either recovered, been discharged or migrated.

No health bulletin was issued on Tuesday.

According to the health bulletin, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Delhi rose to 31,309 with 1,366 fresh cases.

India: Lockdown has created atmosphere of weariness, says HC

Mumbai, Jun 10 (PTI) The coronavirus lockdown has created an atmosphere of weariness and exasperation, the Bombay High Court said while granting bail to a man who was arrested for allegedly attacking three policemen when they questioned him for roaming on a road at night during curfew.

Justice Bharati Dangre issued the order on Tuesday while hearing the bail application filed by Karan Nair (27), an architect, who claimed he was mentally disturbed on the day of the incident last month due to personal reasons.
