India: West Bengal allows 50 people at weddings, funerals

Kolkata, Jun 30 (PTI) The West Bengal government has allowed 50 people at marriage functions and funerals during the next phase of the coronavirus lockdown from July 1 to 31.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said morning walks will be allowed from 5.30 am till 8.30 am, provided social distancing and all other norms are strictly followed".

"From now onwards, we will be allowing 50 people both at weddings and last rites," Banerjee said.

India: Father-Son duo thrashed all night by Sathankulam police

Tuticorin(TN), Jul 1 (PTI) Personnel at the Sathankulam police station here thrashed a deceased father-son duo the whole night there, with lathis used for allegedly assaulting them and a table carrying blood stains, a woman head constable attached to the station has told a judicial probe.

Mentioning Head Contable Revathy's statement in a four-page report to the Madras High Court Madurai Bench, the Judicial Magistrate probing the deaths said she feared receiving threat if she revealed the facts.

India: Junior students find online classes languorous

KANPUR: When the online classes are getting prominence, the junior class students are finding it too hard to join in the morning. They appear to be abhorring this kind of teaching as they don't show up enthusiasm in getting up early in the morning.

Normally, when they were attending classes at the school they looked too responsible to prepare for the school early in the morning. Perhaps it was due to being habitual of timing and norm. Since the schools have not opened they seemed to have developed a lethargic behaviour.  

India: Goa BJP MLA tests positive for coronavirus

Panaji, Jul 1 (PTI) A BJP MLA from Goa has tested positive for coronavirus, a senior state health official said on Wednesday.

The legislator was admitted to Margao-based ESI Hospital, a specially designated facility for COVID-19 patients, after his test came out positive on Tuesday, the official said.

"The MLA is asymptomatic. All those who came in contact with him will be tested," Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told reporters.

India: Occultist arrested for raping woman in Greater Noida

Noida (UP), Jul 1 (PTI) An occultist was arrested in Greater Noida on Wednesday for allegedly raping a woman on the pretext of finding solutions to her family problems, police said.

The incident took place on Monday in the Rabupura police station area when the 20-year-old woman's husband took her to the occultist, 35, officials said.

The couple met the accused at his residence in nearby Faleda village from where he took them to a farmland.

India: Six men killed in boiler explosion in TN

Neyveli(TN), Jul 1 (PTI) Six men were killed and 16 others injured when a boiler exploded at the NLC India's thermal plant here on Wednesday, an official said.

Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing anguish over the loss of lives, spoke to Chief Minister K Palaniswami and assured all possible help.

While preliminary inputs from the explosion site said two people died, the toll has gone up to six now, the NLC official said.

"Six men have died. Sixteen people who sustained injuries have been rushed to a hospital in Chennai," he said.

Indian Navy repatriates over 600 Indians from Iran

Tuticorin, Jul 1 (PTI) The Indian Navy on Wednesday repatriated over 600 Indians from Iran as part of the Centre's "Samudra Setu" mission to evacuate stranded Indian citizens from abroad.

Indian Navy Ship Jalashwa repatriated 687 Indian nationals from Iran and arrived at the VOC Port here today.

It had left Bandar Abbas in Iran on June 25.

Those who arrived on Wednesday hailed from Tamil Nadu and Kerala, officials said.

India, Pakistan exchange lists of civilian prisoners

New Delhi, Jul 1 (PTI) India and Pakistan on Wednesday exchanged lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in their respective custodies as per the provisions of a 2008 agreement.

India handed over lists of 265 Pakistani civilian prisoners and 97 fishermen in its custody to Pakistan, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Similarly, Pakistan has shared lists of 54 civilian prisoners and 270 fishermen in its custody, who are Indians or believed-to-be Indians, the MEA said.

Indian PM announces free ration for 80 cr people till November end

New Delhi, Jun 30 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), a programme to provide free ration for over 80 crore people, mostly poor, by five more months till November end

In a televised address to the nation, the prime minister said over Rs 90,000 crore will be spent on the programme's extension, and if the last three months expenditure on account of the free ration scheme is added then the total budget will be about Rs 1.5 lakh crore
