India: Lightning, Thunderstorm Kill 11 In Bihar

NEW DELHI, July 1 (NNN-PTI) – At least 11 people were killed, due to lightning and thunderstorm, in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, officials said today.

The deaths have taken place during the past 24 hours in several parts of the state.

“In Bihar, lightning claimed 11 lives in different parts of the state during the past 24 hours. Four deaths were reported from Saran, two each in Patna and Nawada, and one each from Lakasarai and Jamui,” a local government spokesperson said.

India: Eight core industries' output shrinks 23.4%

New Delhi, Jun 30 (PTI) The output of eight core infrastructure industries shrank by 23.4 per cent in May due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, according to the official data.

The eight core sectors had expanded by 3.8 per cent in May 2019, the data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry on Tuesday showed.

India: UP Congress leader held in connection with anti-CAA stir

Lucknow, Jun 30 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Congress minority cell chief Shahnawaz Alam has been arrested in connection with violence during a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in the state capital last year, police said on Tuesday.

"Alam was arrested from Hazratganj area on Monday night in connection with an FIR registered at the Hazratganj police station in connection with the violent protest during an anti-CAA agitation on December 19 last year. Alam's location was found near the violence spot," a senior police official said.

India: Chinese app ban: TikTok invited to meet concerned government stakeholders

New Delhi, Jun 30 (PTI) TikTok on Tuesday said it is in the process of complying with the government's order on blocking of the app, and asserted that it has not shared information of Indian users with any foreign government, including that of China.

The short video-sharing company said it has been invited to meet with concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications.

India: Punjab CM says nobody wants Khalistan

Chandigarh, Jun 29 (PTI) Asserting that nobody wants a separate state for Sikhs, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday dismissed a recent statement of Akal Takht Jathedar that the Sikh community will accept Khalistan if the government offers it.

Sikhs living in the country are leading prosperous lives. Why would they want a Khalistan? Nobody wants it and I do not want it, said Singh while replying to a question on Khalistan during a press conference here.

Singh said every Sikh always stood for the unity and integrity of the country.

India: Punjab CM for reopening of Kartarpur corridor

Chandigarh, Jun 29 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday said he is for the reopening of the Kartarpur corridor with adherence to the physical distancing norms amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

His statement came two days after Pakistan conveyed its readiness to India to reopen the Kartarpur corridor on the occasion of the death anniversary of Sher-e-Punjab or "Lion of Punjab" Maharaja Ranjit Singh who ruled the Sikh empire spread across the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19th century.

India: Father hugs dead child, says doctors didn't attend

Kannauj (UP), Jun 29 (PTI) In a heart-wrenching incident caught on tape, parents were seen grieving over the death of their one-year-old child at a government hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj.

An emotional father was seen clinging to the body of his son Anuj who died of fever after he was brought to the district hospital there for treatment on Sunday night.

Premchand, a resident of Mishripur village in Kannauj district, is heard alleging in the video that no doctor saw his child.

India: Man kills 17-year-old daughter over affair in UP

Bahraich (UP), Jun 30 (PTI) A 17-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her father in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district over an affair she was having after her marriage, police said on Tuesday.

The accused, Subhash, allegedly slit his daughter's throat as she was unwilling to record statement against her lover, Chhotkau, in a case filed by him on June 20, Superintendent of Police Vipin Mishra said.

The father was arrested on Monday, he said.

India: Athlete forced to sell vegetables in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Jun 30 (PTI) Athlete Geeta Kumari was forced to sell vegetables in the streets of Jharkhands Ramgarh district to make ends meet.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren's intervention helped Kumari to get Rs 50,000 from the Ramgarh district administration and also a monthly stipend of Rs 3,000 to pursue her athletics career.
