India: Naxal terrorist gunned down in Gadchiroli

Gadchiroli, Jul 4 (PTI) A naxal who was gunned down by the police in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district has been identified as a commander of a unit, who had Rs 8 lakh reward on his head, an official said on Saturday.

The personnel from C-60, a specialised combat unit of the district police, were on an operation in a jungle under Hedri police help centre in Mauza Yeldami on Friday when an exchange of fire took place with Maoist ultras.

The body of a naxal was recovered from the forest after the encounter, the official said.

India: Odisha govt to give monthly pension to transgenders

Bhubaneswar, Jul 4 (PTI) The Odisha government has decided to include members of the transgender community in a social welfare scheme which provides a monthly pension to the needy, a minister said.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved a proposal to cover the members of the community under the Madhu Babu Pension Yojana (MBPY) which aims at providing financial assistance to the destitute elderly, differently-abled persons and widows, he said.

India: In highest single-day spike, nearly 23k test positive for COVID; death toll rises to 18,655

New Delhi, July 4 (PTI) With 22,771 people testing positive for coronavirus in the highest single-day spike so far, India's COVID-19 tally climbed to 6,48,315 on Saturday, while the death toll rose to 18,655 with 442 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

With a steady rise, the number of recoveries stands at 3,94,226 and one patient has migrated. There are 2,35,433 active cases of coronavirus presently in the country, the updated data at 8 am showed.

"Thus, around 60.80 per cent of patients have recovered so far," an official said.

India's Modi rallies troops at China border, as Beijing urges caution

NEW DELHI/ BEIJING (Reuters) - India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew on Friday into the northern border region where Indian and Chinese troops are locked in a stand-off, and said the military stood ready to defend his country.

His comments prompted Beijing to call for restraint at the tense border area in the northern Himalayan region of Ladakh.

Modi, making his first trip to the Ladakh region since the Indian army lost 20 soldiers in a clash with Chinese soldiers last month, said his country’s commitment to peace should not be seen as a sign of weakness.

India: Crowded roads look wider in Civil Lines area

KANPUR: The road that used to be crowded near the District Court was not crowded these days.The roadside makeshift shop for typing, completing notary related documents and etc were running as usual. Their customers are turning up regularly.  

There were quite a negligent number of customers on Friday morning. The reason behind this scarcity of the customers was clear. The reality of no crowd rule was clearly applied on the road. 

As the vehicles' entry was not allowed and the shops have also closed the crowd was missing thereby giving the look of road  quite wider. 

India: Israel, Palestine should work on two-state solution

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said: “Our position on this is very clear and I would like to reiterate that the final status issues should be resolved through direct negotiations between the two parties.”

He also said that the ruling BJP was rattled by her growing popularity.

India: 26 killed by lightning strikes in Bihar

Patna, Jul 2 (PTI) Twenty-six people were killed after being struck by lightning across Bihar on Thursday, officials said.

More than 100 people have died due to lightning strikes in the state in the last one week, they added.

According to the state disaster management department, the casualties were reported from eight districts -- Patna, Samastipur, East Champaran, West Champaran, Sheohar, Katihar, Madhepura and Purnea.

India: Minor girl sexually assaulted, killed in TN

Pudukottai (TN), Jul 2 (PTI) A missing seven-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and killed allegedly by a man in a village near here, following which he has been arrested, police said here on Thursday.

The crime coming close on the heels of a killing of a 13 -year old girl in this district, has led to an outrage and Chief Minister K Palaniswami assured stern legal action against the accused involved in the ghastly crime.

Condoling her death, the CM said he was grieved to learn that she was sexually assaulted and killed.
