India: Bihar minister Kapil Deo Kamat dies of COVID-19

Patna, Oct 16 (PTI) Bihar's Panchayati Raj minister Kapil Deo Kamat succumbed to COVID-19 early on Friday at AIIMS, Patna, family sources said. He was 70.

Kamat is survived by two sons and four daughters. His wife died a few months ago.

"Kapil Deo Kamat died of COVID-19 at 1:50 am (Friday) here at AIIMS, Patna. He was suffering from kidney failure and had been on ventilator over the past few days," Dr Sanjeev Kumar, the COVID-19 nodal officer of AIIMS-Patna, told PTI.

India: SC rejects PIL seeking dismissal of Maharashtra govt

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) The Supreme Court Friday refused to entertain a PIL seeking dismissal of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra and imposition of President's Rule in the state.

A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian said that it could not entertain prayers like these.

"As a petitioner, you are at liberty to approach the President, but do not come here," the top court said in a hearing conducted via video conferencing.

India: Flood situation remains grim in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Oct 16 (PTI) The flood situation in many parts of Karnataka remained grim on Friday as well due to torrential rains and release of water from the major dams in the state.

North Karnataka remained the worst affected as this was the third time floods hit the region in the last three months.

Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Gadag, Dharwad, Bagalkote, Vijayapura and Haveri were the worst hit.

An overflowing river Bhima wreaked havoc in Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts inundating many villages and destroying standing crops.

India: SP workers stage protest at KMC office

Kanpur: Samajwadi Party staged Halla Bol agitation to protest loot in the name of house tax at Nagar Nigam premises here on Thursday. The party workers were present in large numbers. The party's two MLAs were also present during the agitation.

Both the MLAs reached on foot as police barricaded the area completely.

The protesters were blaming the Corporation for an increase in loot and harassment cases against the traders during the Corona time

India: Abdul Kalam will always remain an inspiration to every Indian: VP Naidu

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI) Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday remembered former president A P J Abdul Kalam on his birth anniversary, recalling his words that dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts result in action.

Kalam was born in 1931 in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu.

Describing Kalam as 'People's President', Naidu said he was an epitome of simplicity and knowledge.

India: Himachal Pradesh speaker tests positive for coronavirus

Shimla, Oct 14 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Vipin Singh Parmar tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday.

In a Facebook post, Parmar said he had developed coronavirus symptoms two days ago.

"I have isolated myself at my official residence on doctors' advice," he added.

So far, 13 legislators, including the speaker and CM Jai Ram Thakur, have contracted the virus.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday.

India: Mulayam tests COVID positive, hospitalised

Lucknow, Oct 14 (PTI) Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the party said on Wednesday.

The 80-year-old leader is admitted to the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon.

"Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav has tested positive for COVID-19 and is being monitored by doctors. As of now, there are no COVID symptoms in him," it tweeted.

India: 9-year-old raped by neighbour in UP's Banda

Banda (UP), Oct 15 (PTI) A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, police said Thursday.

The incident happened on Wednesday when the girl was alone in her home in a village under Bisanda police station area. It came to light when the mother of the girl returned home late evening after which a case was lodged, a police official said.

Samsuddin (22), the neighbour, has been arrested, he said.

The victim has been sent to a government hospital for medical examination, he added.

Mumbai, Oct 15 (PTI) Shiv Sena on Thursday said Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari should be recalled if Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah wish to preserve the "prestige" of Raj Bhavan.

An editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamana launched a stinging attack on Koshyari (78) who recently wrote to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on reopening places of worship and asked if the Sena leader had "suddenly turned secular."

India: Woman who set herself on fire in front of UP BJP office dies

Lucknow, Oct 15 (PTI) A 35-year-old woman, who had set herself on fire near the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, succumbed to the injuries at a hospital in Lucknow, police said Thursday.

The woman, from Maharajganj, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday with severe burn injuries and died last night, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Somen Barma said.

A person named Alok Prasad, also from Maharajganj, has been arrested on the charge of abetment to suicide, Barma said.
