India: Dalit woman gang-raped at gunpoint in UP

Kanpur, Oct 18 (PTI) A Dalit woman was allegedly raped at gunpoint by two men, including a former village head, in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Sunday.

"The incident took place a week back, but the police were informed about the alleged gang-rape on Sunday," Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Dehat) Keshav Kumar Choudhary said.

India: Elderly priest beaten to death by drunk man in UP

Azamgarh, Oct 18 (PTI) An elderly priest was allegedly beaten to death by a man who was in an inebriated condition after the octogenarian refused to give him money to buy liquor, police said on Sunday.

They said the incident took place on Saturday night in Gulaur village when the priest, Ramchandra Das (80), was returning from a neighbouring village.

The man came up to him in an inebriated state and asked for money. When the priest refused, he beat him up with a stick, and fled from the spot, police said.

India: BJP leader, four others held in Ballia murder case

Ballia/Lucknow, Oct 18 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested a BJP leader and four others in the Ballia murder case, officials said on Sunday.

Local BJP leader Dhirendra Pratap Singh allegedly shot dead Jai Prakash Pal Gama (46) on Thursday following a quarrel over the allotment of ration shops at Durjanpur village in Ballia's Reoti area.

The Uttar Pradesh government had suspended the SDM, circle officer and other policemen present at the spot.

Mumbai, Oct 17 (PTI) On the orders of a local court, Mumbai Police on Saturday registered an FIR against actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel for allegedly promoting enmity between different communities and other charges.

The Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate's court had ordered the police to investigate a complaint filed by Munawwar Ali Sayyed, a Bollywood casting director and fitness trainer, which referred to Ranaut's and her sister's tweets and other statements.

India: Pulwama boy tops NEET exam from J-K

Srinagar, Oct 17 (PTI) A teenager from militancy-infested south Kashmir's Pulwama district has topped the NEET examination from the Union Territory despite internet connectivity issues in most parts of the valley since over a year.

Basit Bilal Khan (18) secured 695 marks out of 720 in the NEET exam, the result of which was declared on Friday.

Khan, hailing from Ratnipora village in Pulwama, said while he worked very hard for the competitive examination, frequent internet outages and slow network speed created a lot of hardships.

India: Two held for setting activist on fire in Goa

Panaji, Oct 17 (PTI) Two men were arrested from Maharashtra for allegedly setting a local activist on fire at a village near Panaji in Goa, police said on Saturday.

With the help of Maharashtra police, Mapusa residents Shrikant Badigar and Prashant Laxman Dabholkar were nabbed from Talere village in Sindhudurg taluka of the neighbouring state on Friday night, a Goa police spokesperson said.

India: Assam to close down govt madrassas, Sanskrit tols

Guwahati, Oct 17 (PTI) All government-run madrassas and Sanskrit tols (schools) will be closed down by the Assam government and the notification to this effect will be issued in November, state Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.

The State Madrassa Education Board, Assam will be dissolved and all the government-run madrassas will be converted into high schools, he said.

New admissions will be held for the existing students as regular ones, he said.
