India: Girl sexually assaulted by relative in northwest Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI) An eight-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by her relative in northwest Delhi's Ashok Vihar area, police said on Thursday.

On Wednesday at 9.55 pm, police received information regarding the sexual assault on a minor girl in Ashok Vihar area. The victim was rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital, a senior police officer said.

A case has been registered under relevant IPC sections and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

India: Youth held for raping teen girl in UP's Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, Oct 22 (PTI) A youth was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in Modinagar area of Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad, police said.

The youth and the girl are neighbours. He allegedly barged into the teenager's house around 12.30 am and took her to the terrace where he raped her, Modinagar police station SHO Jai Karan Singh told PTI.

When the girl screamed for help, he apparently assaulted her. The girl's family members woke up and caught hold of him. Some of her neighbours also gathered there and thrashed him.

India: Man arrested for raping foreign national

New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI) A 37-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a foreign national in central Delhi's Karol Bagh area, police said on Thursday.

The man was arrested by the Jaipur police last month after two other foreign nationals accused him of raping them in Rajasthan's capital.

The Delhi police brought the accused to the national capital from Jaipur for their investigation in the Karol Bagh rape case, and placed him under arrest.

India: No question of supporting demand for Gorkhaland: TMC

Kolkata, Oct 22 (PTI) The TMC on Thursday ruled out the possibility of supporting the demand for Gorkhaland, a day after it welcomed GJM supremo Bimal Guring to its party fold, with the outfit having walked out of the NDA, accusing the BJP-led dispensation of not fulfilling promises.

Senior TMC leader and Lok Sabha MP Saugata Roy said Gurung joined the Mamata Banerjee-led party, as it felt cheated by the saffron camp.

India: Harassed for dowry, pregnant woman dies by suicide

Hyderabad, Oct 22 (PTI): A pregnant woman died by suicide in her house here due to alleged harassment by her husband and parents-in-laws for additional dowry, police said on Thursday.

The 24-year-old techie, who was five months pregnant, took the extreme step by hanging herself from a ceiling fan on Wednesday, the police said.

The woman's mother lodged a complaint stating that her daughter was pestered by her in-laws and her husband, a gym instructor, for additional dowry, they said.

India: UP family court orders wife to pay Rs 1,000 monthly maintenance allowance to husband

Muzaffarnagar, Oct 22 (PTI) A family court here has ordered a woman, who is a government pensioner, to pay a monthly maintenance allowance to her husband, following a petition filed by the latter in this regard.

The woman and the husband have been living separately for many years. The man had filed a petition in 2013 under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, seeking maintenance allowance from his wife.

India: Bihar deputy CM tests positive for COVID-19

Patna, Oct 22 (PTI) Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Thursday said that he has tested positive for COVID-19 and was undergoing treatment, while also asserting that his parameters were fine and he was looking forward to hitting the campaign trail soon in the poll-bound state.

Modi, one of the tallest leaders of the BJP in Bihar, had been missing from action for quite some time and was conspicuous by his absence when Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman released the party's manifesto earlier in the day.

Patna, Oct 22 (PTI) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Thursday released the BJPs manifesto for the Bihar assembly polls which seeks to reach out to the youth with the promise of 19 lakh jobs in the next five years and farmers with the assurance of bringing lentils under the MSP regime.

Carrying the tagline BJP hai to bharosa hai, the party drew heavily upon the trust enjoyed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi among the masses by virtue of pro-people measures like the Jan Dhan scheme and the Ujjwala Yojana.

India: JNU to reopen in phased manner from Nov 2

New Delhi, Oct 21 (PTI) The Jawaharlal Nehru University will reopen in a phased manner from November 2, starting with day scholars and final year PhD students who need to access laboratories and submit their theses, according to an official statement.

The university has been physically shut since March in view of the coronavirus pandemic. The JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) has been demanding a phased return of research scholars to the campus and has been on an indefinite sit-in at the university's gate since Saturday.

India: 8 more arrested by Maha CID in Palghar mob lynching case, total186 arrests

Mumbai, Oct 22 (PTI) The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Maharashtra Police on Thursday arrested eight more people in connection with thelynching of three persons by a mob in Palghar district in April this year, a police official said.

With this, 186 people have so far been arrested and 11 juveniles detained in connection with the incident.

After the arrest of 24 people on Wednesday, the police nabbed eight more persons on Thursday, the official said.
