India: COVID-19 patient found hanging in hospital toilet

Kolkata, Apr 26 (PTI) A 75-year-old man, undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at Beliaghata ID and BG hospital here, was found hanging in the toilet of the clinical establishment on Monday morning, police said.

The deceased, identified as Kalachand Das, was admitted to the facility on Sunday night after testing positive for coronavirus, a police officer said.

He was a resident of Kudghat Purba Putiary area in the city.

India: Man murders COVID infected wife, later kills himself

Patna, Apr 26 (PTI) A man killed his COVID infected wife Monday and later himself jumped to death in a locality in capital Patna, police said.

The woman was murdered by a sharp weapon by the husband in their residence under Patrakaar nagar police station area here, Station House Office Ravi Dutt said.

The 49-year-old man Atul Lal, working at Patna Railway station, later jumped to death from his multi-storied residence.

The SHO said neighbours said they were not on good terms and used to fight frequently at home.

India adds 323K fresh COVID-19 cases in single day

New Delhi, Apr 27 (PTI) With 323,144 people testing positive for coronavirus infection in a day, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases has climbed to 17,636,307, while the national recovery rate has further dropped to 82.54 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday.

The death toll increased to 197,894 with 2,771 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

There has been a slight dip in the daily cases as compared to the number of new infections reported in the past few days.

Oxygen tankers from Thailand arrive in India

New Delhi, Apr 27 (PTI) Another consignment of containers for the transportation of medical oxygen has arrived in India from Thailand, the Union Home Ministry said on Tuesday.

This is the third consignment of empty oxygen containers flown to the country in the Indian Air Force's (IAF) transport aircraft by the home ministry amidst a surge in COVID-19 cases and a subsequent increase in demand for medical oxygen.

India to build over 500 new medical oxygen plants to ensure supplies amid COVID-19 surge

NEW DELHI, April 25 (Xinhua) -- As many as 551 new medical oxygen generation plants would be set up across India in a bid to address the shortage of oxygen amid the COVID-19 surge, said an official statement issued by the prime minister office Sunday.

The federal government's decision to set up these oxygen plants assumes significance in the wake of widespread shortage of oxygen at hospitals across the country, leading to deaths of many COVID-19 patients, especially in Delhi over the past few days.

Record high of 352,991 new cases take India's COVID-19 tally to over 17 mln

NEW DELHI, April 26 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 tally surpassed 17 million on Monday with a fresh high of 352,991 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours, said the health ministry.

This was the fifth consecutive day when over 300,000 cases were registered in a single day.

According to the figures released by the federal health ministry, 2,812 deaths were registered in a day, taking the death toll to 195,123.

India: Woman catering for wedding gangraped in UP's Agra

Agra (UP), Apr 26 (PTI) A woman in her early thirties was allegedly raped by a confectioner and his friends here, police said on Monday, adding one of the accused was detained.

The woman, a cook, was allegedly gangraped on Sunday night when she had gone to cater for a wedding.

A case was lodged at Barhan Police Station in Agra in Uttar Pradesh on the basis of a complaint made by her husband.

She was left unconscious after the assault and was rushed to a police post when she regained consciousness, according to the complaint.
