India: L-G now effective in-charge of Delhi, MHA notifies Act

New Delhi, Apr 28 (PTI) Delhi's lieutenant governor has become the effective in-charge of the national capital with the Centre notifying a new law making it clear the city's elected government will now have to seek the opinion of the L-G before any executive decision.

The Union Home Ministry's notification giving effect to the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2021 came on Tuesday night, as the city battles a ferocious COVID-19 wave and its healthcare system is stretched to breaking point.

India: Former DU professor N K Bhattacharya passes away, daughter dies of Corona

New Delhi, Apr 28 (PTI) Former Delhi University professor and human rights activist N K Bhattacharya has passed away, according to a statement.

He was the convener of Jan Hastakshep, a citizen's forum, based here, the organisation said.

"We lost a great human rights activists and a good human being," the statement issued by Jan Hastakshep said.

The Indian Federation of Trade Unions paid tributes to Bhattacharya and remembered him as a fighter for human rights.

India: Popular Bengali writer Anish Dev dies of Corona

Kolkata, Apr 28 (PTI) Popular Bengali writer Anish Dev died at a city hospital on Wednesday after being infected with COVID-19, family sources said.

Dev, who was on ventilation, died at the age of 70, they said.

He is survived by his wife and daughter.

The writer was admitted to a private hospital after suffering cardiac arrest at home a few days back and was later diagnosed with COVID-19 infection.

Dev, who was on ventilation, died at around 7:10 am.

Born in 1951 in the metropolis Deb started writing at the age of 18.

India: CBSE School authorities stop accepting fee month-wise

Kanpur: There is absolutely no relief in the  fee structure of schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education in the academic year 2021-22.

Not only the fee amount has been raised but the facility of monthly deposit of fee has also been snatched from the parents.

When the classes are being run online, what is the justification for charging heavy amounts as a fee and not giving a chance to pay a monthly fee?

It will of course be a big relief to the patents if the parents were allowed to deposit the fee month-wise.

India tops 200,000 dead as virus surge breaks health system

Indian capital chief minister announces free COVID-19 vaccine for all above 18

NEW DELHI, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Monday that his government will vaccinate all above 18 years of age free of cost at public hospitals in the Indian capital.

"The Delhi government has decided to provide free vaccines to everyone above 18 years of age. Today we have given the approval for the purchase of 13.4 million vaccines. We will make an effort to ensure that it is purchased soon and administered at the earliest to people," Kejriwal said in a video address on Monday.

India: Maha prison officer sacked for violating two-child norm

Pune, Apr 27 (PTI) A woman prison superintendent in Pune has been dismissed from service for allegedly violating the two-child norm and suppressing the fact that she had three children.

Maharashtra home department's deputy secretary N S Karad, in an order issued on Monday, said Swati Jogdand, posted as superintendent in the Pune district prison, concealed information that she had three children before her appointment in the department in 2012.

Kolkata, Apr 26 (PTI) Campaigning for the eighth and final phase of polling for 35 assembly constituencies in West Bengal, scheduled to be held on April 29, ended at 6.30 p m on Monday.

A total 84,77,728 voters -- 43,55,835 male, 41,21,735 women and 158 of the third gender are eligible to decide the fate of 283 candidates in Thursday's polling which will be held in six constituencies of Malda, 11 in Murshidabad, seven in Kolkata North and 11 in Birbhum, Election Commission sources said.

India: Uttarakhand avalanche toll rises to 15

Gopeshwar, Apr 26 (PTI) The death toll in an avalanche at Sumna near the Indo-China border in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district rose to 15 on Monday with the recovery of three more bodies, an official said.

Three people are still missing and efforts are on to locate them, Chamoli Disaster Management Officer N K Joshi said.
