India: Allahabad HC Judge dies of COVID-19

Allahabad (UP), Apr 28 (PTI) Justice Virendra Kumar Srivastava of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court died of COVID-19 on Wednesday. He was 59.

Srivastava, who had tested positive for coronavirus, was undergoing treatment at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute (SGPGI) in Lucknow.

While giving this information, Allahabad High Court Registrar (Protocol) Ashish Kumar Srivastava said that Justice Srivastava died at SGPGI on Wednesday.

India: Dues not paid by Mizoram govt, staring at power crisis

Aizawl, Apr 28 (PTI) A power crisis in Mizoram is looming large as two of six public sector utilities may start regulating supply to the state, if the government, which is currently facing a fund crunch, is not able to pay a part of Rs 130 crore outstanding dues to these companies, a minister said on Wednesday.

The outstanding dues to power utilities have risen as the government could not receive its share of funds from the Centre, state power and electricity minister R Lalzirliana said.

India: Rajput leader dies of COVID-19

Jaiipur, Apr 29 (PTI) Rajput leader Giriraj Singh Lotwara died of COVID-19 here on Thursday, an organisation representing the community said.

Lotwara, who was around 60 years old, was admitted to the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences Hospital in Pratap Nagar, Rajput Sabha Bhawan said.

Lotwara was the president of the Shree Rajput Sabha.

Pradesh Congress Committee chief Govind Singh Dotasra and other leaders condoled the death of Lotwara.

India: Why UK citizen having OCI card deported, Delhi HC

New Delhi, Apr 29 (PTI) The Delhi High Court has asked the Centre why a UK citizen, who holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, was deported when he arrived in India in March to visit his family here.

The counsel appearing for the central government told the court that the UK citizen was deported as he was blacklisted for being involved in the Tablighi Jamaat held in Delhi in March last year.

Justice Prathiba M Singh said the Tablighi was long over and the petitioner, who has been blacklisted, did have a valid OCI card.

India: Few hours of oxygen supply left, says AMU's hospital

Aligarh (UP), Apr 28 (PTI) AMU's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday sent out an alert, saying it has not received oxygen cylinders for the past four days and its own plants are running out of liquid oxygen.

The frontline central government hospital in Uttar Pradesh, which is a part of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has 273 oxygen-dependent patients, including those suffering from COVID-19, officials said.

India: Prohibitory orders in Srinagar as COVID-19 cases soar

Srinagar, Apr 27 (PTI) The Srinagar authorities on Tuesday announced barring assembly of five or more people under Section 144 of the CrPC in view of a massive surge in COVID-19 cases in the city.

"In view of massive spurt in positive cases in District Sringar & after due deliberations, Section 144 CrPC is imposed hereby within the municipal limits of the district to contain further spread of the epidemic. Assembly of five or more persons is banned with immediate effect," Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Aijaz Asad said on Twitter.

India: Consider plea for economic stimulus packages: Madras HC

Chennai, Apr 27 (PTI): The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Centre and state government to consider a plea to provide economic stimulus packages for employees of private and unorganised sectors who have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy gave a direction to this effect while disposing of a PIL petition from advocate S Kalimuthu Mylavan.

India: West Tripura DM forcibly stops wedding, apologises

Agartala, Apr 27 (PTI) The district magistrate of West Tripura, Sailesh Kumar Jadav forcibly stopped a wedding ceremony here while enforcing COVID-19 protocol and apologized for his actions on Tuesday.

Yadav had allegedly stopped the wedding ceremony when it was half way through at a venue here on Monday night.

India: Quake of 6.4 magnitude strikes Assam, six more follow

Guwahati/Shillong/Itanagar, Apr 28 (PTI) Seven back- to-back earthquakes jolted Assam and some other northeastern states on Wednesday morning, causing extensive damage to buildings and forcing people to scamper out of their homes.

The first of the shocks of 6.4 magnitude with its epicentre at 43 km west of Tezpur, the district headquarters of Sonitpur district in Assam, was felt at 7.51 am, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Deputy Director Sanjay O'neil Shaw said.

India: Senior Congress leader Eknath Gaikwad dies of COVID-19

Mumbai, Apr 28 (PTI) Former Maharashtra minister and senior Congress leader Eknath Gaikwad died of COVID-19 infection here on Wednesday, party sources said.

He was 81.

The former MP, who was the father of Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad, succumbed to the viral infection at a city hospital around 10 am, the sources added.

Eknath Gaikwad had also served as the president of the Mumbai Congress.
