India: Madras HC quashes detention order against Bangladeshi

Chennai, Aug 14 (PTI): The Madras High Court has come to the rescue of a Bangladeshi national from being deported to that country by quashing an order dated April 12, 2021.

The court was allowing a writ petition from Ruma Sarkar seeking to quash the order of the Secretary (FAC), Public (Foreigners) Department, detaining her husband Sushil Sarkar and confining him to a special camp for foreigners on the premises of the Central prison in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu.

India: KDA to use remote sensing application to scan unfair edifices

Kanpur: The Kanpur Development Authority will use a remote sensing application to check illegal constructions and verify properties.

A meeting to this effect was held with the KDA officials and the scientist Kapil Saini here. With the help of the images received through the Indian Cartosaf Satellite of the science and technology ministry, it will be able to initiate supervision.

The meeting also discussed how to bring into use the technology in the identification of the KDA's all types of assets and also to  bring the imaging for the digital layout.

India: RTI activist Saket Gokhale joins Trinamool Congress

New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) RTI activist Saket Gokhale Thursday joined the Trinamool Congress in New Delhi.

He said the Mamata Banerjee-led party takes an "aggressive" stand on issues.

"The TMC is the second largest Opposition party in Parliament and it has been my obvious choice. If you look at all the national parties, the TMC takes an aggressive stand. The way the chief minister of Bengal has been fighting on the front foot, that's what I'm looking for," Gokhale said after joining the party.

India: Snake bites man, then man bites snake in revenge and kills it

Jajpur (Odisha), Aug 12 (PTI) In a bizarre case of human revenge, a 45-year-old tribal man reportedly bit a snake to death after the latter bit him in a remote village in Odisha's Jajpur district.

Kishore Badra of Gambharipatia village under Salijanga panchayat under Danagadi block was returning home after working in his paddy field on Wednesday night, when a snake bit him on his leg.

Badra managed to capture the viper and bit it to death in a bid to take revenge.

India: Three held in e-rickshaw driver's thrashing case in Kanpur

Kanpur: The police plunged into action after a video of Hindutva goons thrashing a Muslim e-rickshaw driver  surfaced on social media, where the mob can be seen forcing the man to chant Jai Shree Ram.

Several teams were formed to identify and nab the culprits, and police was quick to arrest three of the goons.

A dharna was staged outside the DCP office here on Thursday night.

The accused are aged between 25 and 30 years. They are said to be residents of the Barra area in the city.

India: Top HNLC militant killed in encounter in Meghalaya

Shillong, Aug 13 (PTI) A dreaded militant, who had surrendered, was killed in an encounter with the police in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district in the early hours of Friday when his home was raided in connection with a series of blasts across the state recently, officials said.

Chesterfield Thangkhiew (54), the former general secretary of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), had surrendered before Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in 2018.

India: HC grants bail to man accused of being ISIS member

Mumbai, Aug 13 (PTI) The Bombay High Court on Friday granted bail to a 28-year-old man, arrested for allegedly being a member of the banned terror outfit - Islamic State (ISIS).

A division bench of Justices S S Shinde and N J Jamadar allowed the petition filed by Iqbal Ahmed Kabir Ahmed challenging an order of a special court refusing bail to him.

"The order passed by the special court is quashed. The appellant (Ahmed) shall be released on bail upon furnishing a bond of Rs one lakh and one or two solvent sureties of the same amount," the bench said.

India: No Tazia procession allowed during Muharram in Kanpur

Kanpur: Neither the procession nor Tazia will be taken out during the first ten days of the month of Muharram. Even Tazia will not be kept on public places. No permission was given even to bury the Tazia at the Imambara.

This was made clear by the administrative officers in a meeting held here. 

In the majlis, the participation of only 50 persons is allowed. Tazia can be allowed at the houses.

Assuring the district magistrate Alok Tiwari the Muslim religious heads said the procession would not be taken out.

India: UP Cong mass contact programme from Aug 19

Lucknow, Aug 12 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Congress will launch a mass contact programme from August 19 to cover the state's 30,000 villages and wards where party leaders will stay for over three days under the drive.

State party chief Ajay Kumar Lallu said around 90 lakh people will be contacted under the drive, being launched on the directions of party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

India: SC seeks action taken by Centre on recommendations of National Task Force on Oxygen

New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) The Supreme Court Monday asked the Centre to submit within two weeks the action taken report (ATR) on implementing the suggestions of of the court-appointed National Task Force (NTF) on allocation of oxygen to states and Union Territories amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The top court said that since the NTF consists of senior doctors and experts from all over the country, it is imperative for the Centre to take steps to ensure that its recommendations are duly implemented at the policy level to meet any exigencies in present and foreseeable future.
