Indian BSF offers sweets to Pak Rangers on Independence Day

Attari (Amritsar), Aug 15 (PTI) The Border Security Force on Sunday offered sweets to the Pakistani Rangers at Attari-Wagah border on the occasion of Independence Day, officials said.

Indian troops on Saturday had greeted their Pakistani counterparts on their nation's Independence Day and exchanged sweets along the Line of Control and the International Border in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan Rangers had offered sweets to the BSF at the Attari-Wagah border. The Indian border guarding force reciprocated the gesture on Sunday.

India: Patriotic fervour grips Delhi on 75th Independence Day

New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) Men and women dressed in saffron, white and green clothes and children got the national flag painted on their cheeks as Delhi soaked in the colours of "desh bhakti" on the 75th Independence Day on Sunday.

A number of people gathered in central Delhi's Connaught Place and on the roads leading to the iconic India Gate in the afternoon despite muggy weather to participate in the celebrations.

Guwahati, Aug 15 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday appealed to ULFA (I) chief Paresh Barua to come to the negotiating table.

Sarma also expressed his gratitude to COVID warriors for their unrelenting fight against the pandemic, and reaffirmed his government's commitment to the war against drugs and human trafficking.

He made 10 'requests' to the people of Assam, including taking care of aging parents and marrying off daughters not before the age of 21, to mark the 75th Independence Day.

India’s COVID-19 Tally Rises To 32,156,493

NEW DELHI, Aug 14 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 32,156,493 today, as 38,667 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry’s latest data.

Besides, as many as 478 deaths due to the pandemic since yesterday morning took the total death toll to 430,732.

There are still 387,673 active COVID-19 cases in the country, with an increase of 2,446 active cases during the past 24 hours.

India: 224 unfit govt vehicles running on road in Kanpur

Kanpur: As many as 224 government vehicles are marked unfit in the city. About 70 percent of the vehicles are running in the police department while several vehicles of the PWD are also moving without a fitness test on the road.

According to the record of the regional transport department, the fitness test of about ten vehicles registered in the name of ADGP has not taken place in eleven years. These vehicles were not brought for fitness test after March 2010. Likewise more than one hundred vehicles in the police department are running without the fitness test.

Twitter transfers India head Manish Maheshwari to US

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) Twitter has transferred to the US its India head Manish Maheshwari, against whom an FIR was registered in Uttar Pradesh in connection with a probe related to a video of an alleged hate crime.

While the company did not specify any reason for the change, it said Maheshwari will move to the US as Senior Director (Revenue Strategy and Operations) and focus on new markets in the latest role.

India: Twitter unlocks accounts of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) Twitter Saturday restored the account of Rahul Gandhi, alongside those of the Congress and its other leaders, amid ongoing friction between the social media platform and the party over its members sharing pictures of the family of an alleged rape victim.

"Satyameva Jayate (truth alone triumphs)", the Congress tweeted in its first reaction after its official handle was unlocked.
