India: No rains in Jajmau, people pray for heavy showers

Kanpur: With the clouds and sun the evening temperature gives a feel of 41 degrees Celsius in Jajmau here. The people are praying in their daily prayers for rains at cats and dogs.

Cloud cover remains at 53 per cent but rains are out. Humidity requires continuous showers for at least two hours.

Though in the forenoon and later too there was extreme sun over us. People were seen getting at shady space but it was hard to find.

India: J-K expecting investment proposals worth Rs 50,000 cr: LG

Srinagar, Aug 15 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir is expecting investment proposals worth Rs 50,000 core which have the capacity to provide employment opportunities to 10 lakh persons, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said here on Sunday.

"So far, proposals worth Rs 23,500 crores have been received. Investment proposals of Rs 35,000 crore by December 2021 and Rs 50,000 crore by March 2022 are expected to follow, which shall provide employment opportunities to at least 10 lakh young boys and girls," Sinha said in his Independence Day speech at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium here.

India: Minor girl raped in UP village

Kaushambi, Aug 15 (PTI) A case was registered against a couple following court's order in connection with the alleged rape of a 16-year-old Dalit girl in a village here, police said Sunday.

According to the complaint filed at Paschim Sareera police station by the victim's mother, the accused woman took the girl and handed her over to her husband on January 14 this year.

The accused man then raped the girl in front of his wife, and also threatened the family of dire consequences, if they lodged a complaint, police said.

India: Woman set on fire in UP's Mahoba by parents of her molester

Mahoba, Aug 15 (PTI) A 30-year-old woman was allegedly set on fire by parents of a man, booked in a molestation case lodged by the victim, according to police here on Sunday.

Angry over the registration of the case against their son, the accused's parents poured kerosene over the woman and set her afire, Kulpahar police station SHO Mahendra Pratap Singh said citing the complaint.

The woman is in serious condition and has been taken to a medical college in Jhansi.

India: Himachal landslide: Death toll climbs to 25

Shimla, Aug 16 (PTI) Two more bodies were recovered on Monday from the site of the landslide in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district, taking the death toll to 25, a senior official said.

Search and rescue operation for those missing in the landslide that occurred on Wednesday last are underway.

State Disaster Management Director, Sudesh Kumar Mokhta, said as per information provided by Bhawanagar SHO, two bodies had been retrieved from the rubble at Chaura village on National Highway 5 in Nichar tehsil on Monday.

India: Cong leader Sushmita Dev quits party

New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) Congress leader and the party's women's wing chief Sushmita Dev has quit the party and sent her resignation letter to party chief Sonia Gandhi, sources said on Monday.

She may join the Trinamool Congress, they also said.

Dev, a former MP, is currently a national spokesperson of the Congress and is the All-India Mahila Congress chief.

She offered no reason for her quitting the party.

India: Not all appeared to be poor women when obtaining charity

Kanpur: It was the forenoon and the poor women were waiting for the distribution of food grains along with edible oil at an open space beside a mosque in KDA Colony here on Monday.

This welfare programme was done under the banner of a charity organisation. A banner hanging along the wall hinted at this factual information.

The organisers were standing at the time of videography on quick disposal of flour packet, edible oil bottle, Dal and other things. 

India’s COVID-19 tally rises to 32,192,576

NEW DELHI, Aug 15 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 32,192,576 today, as 36,083 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, according to the federal health ministry’s latest data.

Besides, as many as 493 deaths since yesterday, took the total death toll to 431,225.

There are still 385,336 active COVID-19 cases in the country, as there was a decrease of 2,337 active cases, during the past 24 hours.

India: 2 prison guards arrested in MP for raping inmate's wife

Rajgarh (MP), Aug 14 (PTI) Two prison guards have been arrested for allegedly raping and threatening the wife of an inmate of Narsinghgarh sub jail in Madhya Pradesh's Rajgarh district, police said on Saturday.

The two were held on Friday after the wife of the inmate, a resident of Hoshangabad who has been lodged in the sub jail for the past four years in a fake Indian currency note (FICN) case, filed a complaint, said Narsinghgarh police station in charge Ravindra Chavaria.

India: Modi sets 2047 target for becoming 'energy independent'

New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday set a target of becoming 'energy independent' by 2047 through a mix of electric mobility, gas-based economy, doping ethanol in petrol and making the country a hub for hydrogen production.

Delivering his Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, he said India spends over Rs 12 lakh crore on energy imports every year.
