India: Thackeray urges opposition parties to win people's trust

Mumbai, Aug 21 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has urged the opposition parties to win people's trust and also called upon them to stay united and strong.

He made this appeal during a virtual meeting of opposition leaders convened by Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday.

Talking to reporters, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday said, "During the meeting, Thackeray stressed that the parties must win people's trust."

India: Two Russian women found dead in North Goa in two days

Panaji, Aug 21 (PTI) In separate incidents, two Russian women were found dead at their residences at a beach village in North Goa on two consecutive days, police said on Saturday.

While Alexandra Djavi, 24, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her rented place late on Thursday, the body of her 34-year-old compatriot - Ekaterina Titova - was recovered from her apartment on Friday, a senior police official told PTI.

New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Merely because an arrest can be made as it is lawful does not mandate that it must be made, the Supreme Court has said, while observing that personal liberty is an important aspect of constitutional mandate.

The apex court said if arrest is made routine, it could cause "incalculable harm" to the reputation and self-esteem of a person.

India: Amarinder Singh, Sidhu agree on strategic policy group for better party-govt coordination

Chandigarh, Aug 20 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and State Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday agreed to set up a 10-member strategic policy group to ensure better coordination between the party and the state government and expedite implementation of various government programmes.

The development is seen as a sign of thaw between Singh and Sidhu, amid the ongoing tussle between the two of them.

India: Villagers thrash sub-inspector in UP's Basti

Gorakhpur (UP), Aug 19 (PTI) A sub-inspector posted in UP's Basti district was allegedly held hostage and beaten up by people when he went to Ooji village to meet a woman, police said on Thursday.

The sub-inspector has been suspended on villagers' allegations, who alleged that he opened fire when stopped by them, according to an official.

India: Seven FIRs registered over BJP's rally for violation of COVID-19 norms

Mumbai, Aug 19 (PTI) At least seven first information reports (FIRs) for alleged violation of COVID-19 norms were registered in Mumbai on Thursday against the organizers of the BJP's `Jan Ashirwad Yatra', an official said.

Cases were registered at Vile Parle, Kherwadi, Mahim, Shivaji Park, Dadar, Chembur and Govandi police stations under section 188 of IPC (disobeying an order duly promulgated by public servant) as well as Disaster Management Act and Mumbai Police Act, the official said.

India: Two-time MLA quits BJP over farm laws issue

Ferozepur, Aug 19 (PTI) Two-time Ferozepur MLA Sukhpal Singh Nannu on Thursday quit the BJP, citing the death of farmers during the agitation against the Centre's farm laws.

Nannu had won from Ferozepur city twice as BJP candidate in 2002 and 2007. He lost to Congress' Parminder Singh Pinky in 2012 and 2017.

Addressing the media at his residence, Nannu said due to the death of several farmers during the ongoing agitation against the farm laws, his supporters were upset and forced him to take some decision ahead of the 2022 Assembly polls.

India: Kanpur Metro operator training gears pace at COET, Lucknow

Kanpur: The station controller-cum-train operators are being trained at COET, a prominent metro simulator training centre,  in Lucknow.

It is equipped with all the applicable and updated technical gadgets. This thorough training requires a practice of train operation for 400 Kms on a simulator.

This training will help them procure a 'Competency Certificate.'  

This training is important to conduct the trial runs of the elevated Priority Corridor, running from IIT-Kanpur to Motijheel, scheduled for November 2021.
