India: AI Express offers compensation to Kozhikode crash injured, next of kin

New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) Air India Express said it has made final compensation offers to all 165 passengers, who were injured and the next of kin of 19 flyers who died in the plane crash, in Kerala's Kozhikode district last year.

According to the airline, 80 out of the 165 injured flyers have taken up the offers as on August 6. The airline is awaiting acceptance of the offers from the remaining 85 injured flyers and the next of kin of the 19 deceased passengers.

New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi Saturday congratulated Neeraj Chopra for winning the country's first-ever track-and-field Olympic gold and expressed hope his victory will motivate all sportspersons to excel further.

"I join the nation in congratulating the Golden Boy, Neeraj Chopra for winning the first ever Olympic Gold medal for India in track and field," she said in a statement.

She also extended special congratulations to his coach, family members and well wishers.

Indian Railways invites bids for hydrogen fuel-based tech for trains

New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) The railways has invited bids for hydrogen fuel cell-based technology by retrofitting on the Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) in 89 km Sonipat-Jind section of the Northern Railway, the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

This is an attempt by the national transporter to explore whether existing diesel-run trains can be retrofitted to use hydrogen instead.

India: Following Cairn Energy litigation, Lok Sabha passes bill to end retrospective tax

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) A bill that aims to end all retrospective taxation imposed on indirect transfer of Indian assets was passed by the Lok Sabha on Friday amidst continuous protests by opposition over the alleged snooping through the Pegasus spyware and other issues.

When the 'The Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021' would be passed by Rajya Sabha too, all tax demands made on companies like Cairn Energy and Vodafone using a 2012 legislation on indirect transfer of Indian assets prior to May 28, 2012 will be withdrawn.

India: Girl raped by teenage boys in UP's Pratapgarh

Pratapgarh (UP), Aug 6 (PTI) A six-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two teenage boys in a village in Nawabganj area here, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Thursday when the girl was playing outside her house and two teenagers (ages 14 and 15) took her to a secluded place and raped her, Additional Superintendent of Police Rohit Mishra said.

Later, the girl reached home and told her family members about the incident after which they registered an FIR in this connection.

India: Rahul Gandhi on two-day J&K visit from Monday

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be on a two-day visit to Srinagar from Monday during which he will inaugurate the party's Jammu and Kashmir headquarters and meet Congress workers, sources said.

They said Gandhi is likely to reach Srinagar on August 9 and may attend the wedding of the son of J&K Congress chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir.

On August 10, he will inaugurate the headquarters of J&K unit of the Congress and address a meeting of party workers and leaders in the union territory.

India: Petition against PM, Union home minister dismissed

Nagpur, Aug 6 (PTI) The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed a petition which sought that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah be disqualified under the Representation of the People (RP) Act, 1951.

The court also imposed a cost on the petitioner Ram Khobragade, a lawyer.

India: Fee dues remain on school's priority during online classes

Kanpur: Fee dues remain on the priority of the schools running online classes up to class 8. Almost every morning a message for depositing the monthly fee comes to the parents.This has become a regular practice.

Once, as elders point out, teaching used to be a responsibility of the school whether vernacular or English medium. But now the fee collection is the most calculated affection for the schools.

Parents do deposit the fee month after month but they falter owing to their fiscal limitations.
