India: Sena leader Raut meets Rahul Gandhi in Delhi

Mumbai, Aug 2 (PTI) Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Monday met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi and discussed issues related to Maharashtra, where the two parties are allies in the ruling coalition, as well as national politics.

Raut said Gandhi expressed satisfaction over the functioning of the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government which assumed office in November 2019.

Indian PM Modi to chair debate at UNSC

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually preside over an open debate on maritime security at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on August 9.

Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Arindam Bagchi said it will be the first time an Indian Prime Minister will chair an open debate at the UN Security Council.

India is holding the presidency of the UNSC for August.

India: Two BSF personnel killed in Tripura NLFT ambush

New Delhi/Agartala, Aug 3 (PTI) Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were killed on Tuesday when their patrol was ambushed by NLFT militants along the India-Bangladesh international border in Tripura.

The border guarding force said the ambush took place around 6:30 AM in the Dhalai district of the state and those killed included a Sub-Inspector of the force.

The ambush and retaliation by the troops took place near the R C Nath border post that is under the Chawmanu police station area of the district in the Panisagar sector.

India: Delhi govt approves salary hike for MLAs

New Delhi, Aug 3 (PTI) Delhi MLAs will now get Rs 90,000 per month as salary and allowances with the Arvind Kejriwal government approving a hike cap recommended by the Centre on Tuesday.

Earlier, each MLA was getting Rs 53,000, including Rs 12,000 as salary and the remaining amount as allowances, the government said in a statement.

With this hike, each legislator will get Rs 30,000 as salary and allowances totalling Rs 60,000, it said.

India: Oppn leaders meet over breakfast to chalk out joint strategy, Rahul Gandhi calls for unity

New Delhi, Aug 3 (PTI) Leaders of several opposition parties attended a breakfast meeting hosted by former Congress President Rahul Gandhi at the Constitution Club here on Tuesday where stress was laid on opposition unity.

Several opposition MPs led by Gandhi later cycled to Parliament to highlight the issue of fuel price hike.

Some opposition MPs, who could not cycle, walked down to Parliament.

India’s COVID-19 Tally Rises To 31,695,958

NEW DELHI, Aug 2 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 31,695,958 today, as 40,134 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry’s latest data.

Besides, as many as 422 deaths due to the pandemic were reported since yesterday morning, taking the total death toll to 424,773.

There are still 413,718 active COVID-19 cases in the country, as there was an increase of 2,766 active cases during the past 24 hours.

India: Sena workers damage 'Adani Airport' signboard in Mumbai

Mumbai, Aug 2 (PTI) A group of Shiv Sena workers allegedly ransacked a neon signboard with 'Adani Airport' written on it near the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj close to the airport in Mumbai on Monday afternoon, a police official said.

They shouted slogans against the signboard when the airport is named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Some of the workers later came on to the Western Express Highway located nearby due to which traffic movement on the city's arterial north-south road was disrupted for some time, the official said.

India: Babul Supriyo to quit politics; resig as an MP.

Kolkata, Jul 31 (PTI) Days after he was dropped in the central cabinet reshuffle, former Union Minister and BJP leader Babul Supriyo said on Saturday that he has decided to quit politics and will be resigning as an MP.

He hinted the decision was partly due to losing the ministerial berth and also differences with the state BJP leadership.

Supriyo (50), who had held several portfolios as MOS in the Narendra Modi government since 2014, was removed earlier this month in a major cabinet rejig.

India: First Zika virus case found in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Jul 31 (PTI) The first-ever Zika virus infection case in Maharashtra has been reported from Pune district, a health department statement said on Saturday.

The woman patient has recovered completely, it said.

"She and her family members do not have any symptoms," the statement added.

The 50-year-old woman, a resident of Belsar village in Purandar tehsil, received her test report on Friday. The report said that besides Zika infection, she was also infected by the Chickungunya virus.
