India: Flooded Pandu river concerns people in Kanpur

Kanpur: Rise in Pandu river has sent the water level of Ganga swelling which in turn has submerged several villages around the river.

Farmers are badly hit by the Friday showers as their crops have been destroyed. The villagers are compelled to move to safer places.

As the sluice gate has been opened at Haridwar, the surge of water had increased the water level of the river.

India: Haryana to give Rs 50 lakh each to state's 9 women's hockey Olympians

Chandigarh, Aug 6 (PTI) The Haryana government will honour the nine history-making women's hockey players of the state with cash reward of Rs 50 lakh each, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Friday.

"Haryana government will award Rs 50 lakhs each to the nine members of the Olympic women's hockey team who are from Haryana," Khattar tweeted.

He congratulated the Indian women's team for its best-ever performance at the ongoing Olympics, where it finished fourth after losing 3-4 to Great Britain in the bronze medal play-off match in Tokyo on Friday.

India: Covaxin receives GMP certificate from Hungary

Hyderabad, Aug 5 (PTI): Bharat Biotech's COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin has received Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) compliance certificate from Hungary, the vaccine maker said on Thursday in a tweet.

The company in a separate press release said Covaxin production, which started in early Junein Malur and Ankleshwar facilities, will be available for commercial supplies in September.

India: Adulterated mustard oil causes three deaths in Guj

Palanpur, Aug 5 (PTI) Three members of a family in Gujarat's Banaskantha district died in the span of two weeks due to `epidemic dropsy', a rare disease caused by the consumption of adulterated mustard oil, an official said on Thursday.

Seven members of Paliwal family in Kundi village fell sick after eating a dish cooked in locally milled mustard oil, said Epidemic Officer N K Garg.

While four of them recovered following treatment, Chhaganbhai Paliwal (52), his son Navin (24) and daughter Daksha (18) died between July 22 and August 5, he said.

India: Over 49 crore (490 million) Covid vaccine doses administered

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has gone past 49 crore, the Union health ministry said on Thursday.

More than 50.29 lakh (50,29,573) vaccine doses were administered on Thursday, according to a provisional report compiled at 7 pm.

The ministry said 27,26,494 beneficiaries in the age group of 18-44 years received the first dose, while 4,81,823 were administered the second dose of the vaccine on Thursday.

India: Bengal flood situation remains critical; 3 lakh affected

Kolkata, Aug 5 (PTI) The flood situation in West Bengal remained critical on Thursday though there was less rainfall, a senior state government official said.

The number of deaths due to the deluge remained unchanged at 23 as no fresh fatality was reported from any of the seven affected districts where around three lakh people have been shifted to rescue centres.

Mumbai, Aug 6 (PTI) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday expectedly kept interest rates unchanged at a record low as it chose to support economic revival over inflation.

The six-member Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously to retain the main repurchase rate at 4 per cent but was split on continuing with the lower-for-longer stance.

Kanpur: A widowed woman was raped and thrashed by her brother-in-law at a locality here a few days ago. 

According to the news reports, she approached the police station to file a complaint with the police but she was pressurised to make a compromise.

It is after such an outcome she decided to approach a higher rank police officer under whose direction a complaint was registered instantly.

When she came to the house her brother in law beat her mercilessly; even his sisters cooperated in beating the victim whose husband had died due to coronavirus a fews days ago.
