India: 16-year-old girl abducted by occultist in UP's Ballia

Ballia, Jul 31 (PTI) A case has been registered against an occultist for allegedly abducting a 16-year-old girl from an area under the Revti police station here in Uttar Pradesh, an official said on Saturday.

Revti Station House Officer (SHO) Yadvendra Pandey said that the girl had gone to Abhijeet Upadhyay alias Joga Baba on June 29.

Following a complaint from the girl's father on Friday night, a case was registered against the occultist, he said.

A search is on to arrest Upadhyay, the SHO said.

India: Life sentence to man in dowry death case in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Aug 1 (PTI) A Raipur court has awarded life imprisonment to a 28-year-old man in a case of dowry death.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Vikram Pratap Chandra on Saturday convicted Ghanshyam alias Motu Narang, a resident of village Chhachhanpairi here under Mujgahan police station.

His wife Punni Bai was admitted to the Raipur-based DKS Super Speciality Hospital on February 2, 2019 for critical burn injuries and she died on February 7.

India: Three arrested for rape of minor in UP's Kaushambi

Kaushambi (UP), Aug 1 (PTI) Three people were arrested on Sunday in connection with the rape of a minor girl in the Pipri police station area here, officials said.

The victim, aged 15-16, had gone to the fields in her village on Saturday evening when the accused jumped her, they said.

One of them raped her, while the other two kept watch and assisted him, Additional Superintendent of Police Samar Bahadur Singh said.

The girl has been sent for a medical examination, he added.

India: Prominent activists criticise triple talaq law

New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Prominent citizens and activists like Aruna Roy and Teesta Setalvad on Sunday criticised the law against triple talaq, claiming it is fundamentally anti-minority, anti-women and anti-constitutional.

They also said that the law seeks to disparage the Muslim community.

Their remarks came on a day the government and several organisations observed 'Muslim Women's Rights Day' to mark the enactment of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.

India: JD-U MPs meet Shah to demand caste-based census

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Janata Dal-United (JD-U) MPs, led by their newly elected president Rajiv Ranjan Singh, met Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday to demand a caste-based census.

The party, an ally of the ruling BJP-led NDA alliance, had passed a resolution on the matter in its national executive meeting on Saturday.

The party also spoke against any coercive measures such as the enactment of laws to control population growth.

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav met here on Monday.

SP president and Mulayam Singh Yadav's son Akhilesh Yadav was also present in the meeting.

In a tweet in Hindi, Lalu said, "Met the country's senior most socialist friend Shri Mulayam Singhji and enquired about his wellbeing. We have common concerns and fight about farmers, inequality, the poor and the unemployed."

Mastermind behind deadly 2019 Kashmir attack killed in shootout -Indian police

SRINAGAR, India, July 31 (Reuters) - The mastermind behind a 2019 attack that killed 40 Indian paramilitary troops has been killed in a shootout with security forces, Indian police in Kashmir said on Saturday.

Mohammad Ismail Alvi, the commander of militant organization Jaish-e-Mohammad was killed south of the regional capital Srinagar, Vijay Kumar, the police chief of Kashmir told Reuters.

“Mohammad Ismail Alvi alias Lamboo alias Adnan was from the family of Masood Azhar. He was involved in conspiracy and planning of Lethpora Pulwama attack," Kumar said.
