India: Three girls drown in Yamuna river near Sajeti village

Kanpur: Three girls drowned on the Yamuna river below the railway bridge near the Sajeti police station area and Shahbazpur village on Wednesday morning.

From Zara Dera village of Fatehpur, they had come to complete the rite of  Maur Sirwane. 

The people hurriedly pulled the three out of the river and took them to the hospital.

One teenager died before treatment at Hamirpur District Hospital, while two have been treated in critical condition.

India: Kanpur Police stations to have CCTV cameras for clarity

Kanpur: To construct transparency CCTV cameras with sound recorders are being put up at all police stations here. Only police officers will be able to monitor activities happening at police stations via mobiles and ipads.

This structure will come into effect within four days," Additional Commissioner of Police Anand Prakash Tiwari has said.

The work of installing CCTVs began on Tuesday. All the police stations will have this facility in which the entire activities of the police stations will be caught, reports said.

Congress will form next govt in Gujarat: Rahul Gandhi

Dahod (Gujarat), May 10 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday expressed confidence that his party will form the next government in Gujarat, as he attacked the BJP-led central government for creating one India for the rich and one for the poor.

In the BJP model, which has created two Indias, one for the rich and one for the poor, resources of the country belonging to poor people are being given to a few rich people, he said.

India: Tribals lynched in MP, bandh called

Seoni, May 9 (PTI) A bandh called on Monday in Seoni city in Madhya Pradesh to protest against the killing of two tribals over alleged cow slaughter evoked a mixed response, with authorities saying the day passed off peacefully, while some videos circulating on social media showed minor stray incidents.

While many shops were closed, fuel pumps remained open during the shutdown call given by the Moolniwasi Adivasi Sangharsh Samiti and which was backed by various farmers' unions, officials said.

Indian Rupee slides then surges 20 paise to 77.24 against US dollar

Mumbai, May 10 (PTI) The rupee surged 20 paise to 77.24 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday, as a firm trend in domestic equity markets and receding global crude prices boosted investor sentiment.

Besides, a weak American currency against its global rivals also helped the domestic unit, forex traders said.

However, rising concerns over higher interest rates and weakness in global economic growth kept the appreciation bias in check, they added.

India: Cop arrested for raping woman in Maha

Thane, May 10 (PTI) A police constable has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman under the pretext of helping her to solve her problems here in Maharashtra, an official said on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old woman had come to the Navghar police station some time back to lodge a complaint.

The constable, who was posted there, befriended the woman and called her to different places while promising to resolve her woes, and allegedly raped her on various occasions, the official from Navghar police station said.

India: BJP leader Bagga's arrest stayed till July 6 by HC

Chandigarh, May 10 (PTI) In a reprieve for BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday stayed his arrest till July 6 in a case of allegedly making provocative statements, promoting enmity and criminal intimidation.

No coercive action will be taken against Bagga till July 6 when the case will come up for hearing next, Additional Solicitor General Satya Pal Jain, who appeared on behalf of the Delhi Police, said after the court heard the matter.

India: 9-year-old girl raped and murdered by relative in MP

Datia, May 10 (PTI) A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by a distant relative during a marriage function in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district, a senior police official said on Tuesday.

The crime took place in Tiletha village on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday and the 24-year-old accused was later arrested, Superintendent of Police Aman Singh Rathore told reporters.

Some villagers informed personnel at the Goraghat police station on Monday morning that the body of a girl was lying in shrubs near a canal in the village, he said.

India: Woman commits suicide by hanging at shelter home

Kanpur: A woman accused of theft allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the bathroom ceiling at a state-run shelter home here.

She was lodged by police at the shelter home, as reported.

A 23-year-old woman, a resident of Magar Wara in Unnao, worked as domestic help. 

Following the death, relatives of the deceased reached the mortuary and staged a protest.

'We are planning to conduct an inquiry to get all the facts in the case,' said DCP West (Kanpur) BBGTS Murthy.

India: Uproar at Kanpur's DAV College disrupts admit card distribution

Kanpur: Kanpur university Examinations admit card disbursement work was being conducting at DAV College premises here on Monday. Hours later there was an uproar and the work was disrupted.

When the office clerk was approached he simply said I could do nothing. They disturbed the process. 

The students who did not get the admit card remained real sufferers of the noisy spectacle.

First, there was slogan shouting by striking employees of the college and later the students raised the slogans in protest.
