India: Centre, BJP suppressing media: Raj CM Gehlot

Jaipur, May 6 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday alleged that the BJP and the government run by it at the Centre are suppressing the media, which only shows debates on religious polarisation while ignoring real issues.

Gehlot said this expressing concern over India's ranking in the Press Freedom Index, in which country stood at 150th spot among 180 nations.

India: IIT-Kanpur develops water purification device

Kanpur: In a bid to revolutionise the water purification process, a novel device has been devised by IIT Kanpur.

This device is able to produce inorganic contaminant-free water at a cost as low as 2 Rs per litre.

There is no maintenance cost even. It has been developed by the Indian Institute of Technology here.

The device was developed by IIT Kanpur researchers in collaboration with those at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

It will help overcome the challenges in both water availability and water quality monitoring.

India: Travesty of justice: SC on delay in bail to SP leader Azam Khan

New Delhi, May 6 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday expressed displeasure over the delay in hearing the bail application of Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan in a land grabbing case, saying this is a travesty of justice.

A bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao and B R Gavai noted that Khan has got bail in 86 out of 87 cases, and said it would hear the matter on May 11.

Indian opposition seeks higher compensation for COVID deaths after damning WHO report

NEW DELHI, May 6 (Reuters) - India's main opposition Congress party on Friday demanded a hefty rise in compensation for the families of those who died of COVID-19, after the World Health Organization estimated the country's toll was nearly 10 times the reported figure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has rejected the WHO estimate released on Thursday that 4.7 million people died in India as a result of the pandemic until last year, when hospitals ran out of oxygen and beds due to a record wave driven by the Delta variant.

India: Electric Vehicle Expo 2022 to begin on May 6 in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, May 4 (PTI) Karnataka Electric Vehicles-Manufacturers and Dealers Association (KEVMDA), in collaboration with Key Media, is organising a national-level electric vehicle (EV) exhibition 'EV Expo 2022' here from May 6-8.

The expo is set to be held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC).

Over 100 firms manufacturing two-wheelers and four-wheelers, battery companies, spare-parts manufacturers, distributors, and financial service providers are expected to participate in it, said a release from KEVMDA.

Prime Ministers of India, North Europe call for cessation of hostilities in Ukraine

NEW DELHI, May 4. /TASS/: Prime Ministers of India and North European countries believe that an immediate cessation of hostilities in Ukraine is necessary, according to the joint statement, adopted after a summit in Copenhagen.

"The Prime Ministers expressed their serious concern about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. They unequivocally condemned civilian deaths in Ukraine. They reiterated the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities," reads the statement, published on Indian Foreign Ministry website.
