India: LPG price hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder

New Delhi, May 7 (PTI) Cooking gas LPG price on Saturday was hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder to record high levels on the back of firming international energy rates.

A 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in the national capital will now cost Rs 999.50 as against Rs 949.50 per cylinder previously, a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers showed.

This is the second increase in LPG rates in six weeks. Rates were hiked by Rs 50 on March 22.

India needs to revive its 'Sanatan dharma' principles: AM Khan

Shahjahanpur (UP), May 7 (PTI) Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Saturday emphasised the need to revive India's old culture and restore 'Sanatan dharma' principles by spreading proper education in the country.

Governor Khan made remarks while inaugurating a school in Kalan town of the district.

"Everyone has to work towards reviving the old culture of the country, not because we have to go back but because we have to bring back the 'Sanatan' principles and this is not possible without education," Governor Khan said.

India: Khalistan flags hung at entrance of HP Assembly gate

Dharamshala, May 8 (PTI) Khalistan flags were found tied on the main gate and slogans scrawled on the walls of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly complex, police said on Sunday.

The flags were put up on the outer side of the main gate number one of the assembly complex. They were removed by the administration.

The winter session of the HP assembly usually held in Dharamshala.

India: Kolkata on alert amid cyclone Asani forecast

Kolkata, May 8 (PTI) The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has put on alert its employees and disaster management teams in view of the formation of cyclonic storm Asani, which is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclone, mayor Firhad Hakim said on Sunday.

He said the leaves of all employees concerned are being cancelled to deal with any emergency evolving due to the cyclone, which he said is unlikely to hit the city but will bring heavy rains in its wake.

New Delhi, May 8 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday stepped up his attack on the government over the hike in price of domestic LPG cylinder, and said only his party governs for the welfare of poor and middle class families.

India: Man arrested for molesting 2 girls in Delhi school

New Delhi, May 6 (PTI) A 40-year-old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly molesting two girls inside a classroom of a school run by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, police said.

The accused has been identified as Varun Joshi, a resident of Yamuna Vihar, they said.

According to police, the accused is an alcoholic. They said he was found inebriated while being nabbed.

Indian Rupee plummets 55 paise to 76.90 per USD

Mumbai, May 6 (PTI) Snapping its four-day winning run, the rupee slumped 55 paise to close at 76.90 against the US dollar on Friday as heavy foreign fund outflows and hardening crude oil prices took a toll on sentiment.

Global sentiment was risk-averse on renewed concerns over growth and inflation, which hit most emerging market currencies, forex traders said.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened lower at 76.61 against the greenback, and moved in a range of 76.56 and 76.96.

India: Two held for links with terrorists arrested from Karnal

Ferozepur, May 6 (PTI) The Punjab Police on Friday claimed to have nabbed two alleged accomplices of the four suspected Pakistan-linked terrorists, who were arrested with explosives in Haryana's Karnal.

The two arrested have been identified as Akashdeep Singh, alias Akash (25), a resident of Peerke village; and Jashanpreet Singh, alias Jass (19), a resident of Faridkot, police said.

India: Man awarded life term for kidnapping, raping minor girl

Jaipur, May 6 (PTI) A court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a minor girl in Rajasthan's Baran district, police said on Friday.

A special court for trial of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act cases sentenced Sonu Chaudhary (30), hailing from Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh, to life imprisonment till death and imposed a fine of Rs 70,000 on him, Baran Superintendent of Police Kalyan Mal Meena said.
