India: Jamia firing: Accused sent to 14-day protective custody

New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI) The youth who fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters near the Jamia Millia University, in which a student was injured, was on Friday sent to a 14-day protective custody by the Juvenile Justice Board, police said.

The accused was presented before the Board in the afternoon, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajesh Deo said.

India bans export of all kind of respiratory masks

New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI) India on Friday banned exports of all kinds of personal protection equipment, including clothing and masks used to protect people from air borne particles.

The move assumes significance as there could be a spurt in demand for such products due to outbreak of deadly coronavirus that has claimed more than 200 lives in China while the number of confirmed cases reached near 10,000.

India: 86 yr old man gets three years in jail for molesting 15 yr old

Mumbai, Jan 31 (PTI) A special POCSO Act court here on Friday sentenced an 86-year-old man to three years' rigorous imprisonment for stalking and molesting a 15-year-old girl in September 2018.

Omprakash Lalaram Kulshreshta, the accused, was convicted under IPC section 354, 354-D (stalking and molestation) and also the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

India: Cong leader held for sexually abusing minor girl

Kannur (Kerala), Jan 31 (PTI) A Congress party leader was arrested here on Friday on the charge of sexually abusing a nine-year-old girl for the past few years, police said.

P P Babu, 59, was arrested after district childline authorities informed police about the abuse which was revealed by the girl in a counselling session.

British national dies aboard cruise boat in India's Assam State

Jorhat (Assam), Jan 31 (PTI) A 76-year-old tourist from the UK died aboard a cruise boat in Assam on Friday, police said.

Alastair Neil Macdonald was found dead on the 'Charaideo' when it was returning from a week-long tour of areas in Upper Assam. It is owned by the Assam-Bengal Navigation Company, they said.

Macdonald was a part of a 60-member British tourist group visiting the northeastern state.

India: Sharjeel Imam's mobile phone, laptop seized: Police

New Delhi, Jan 30 (PTI) Activist Sharjeel Imam's mobile phone and laptop along with some anti-CAA posters have been seized from his house in Bihar's Jehanabad and rented flat in Vasant Kunj, police said on Friday.

Imam was arrested by the Delhi Police's Crime Branch from Jehanabad in a sedition case and he is being questioned by police for his alleged inflammatory speeches in Aligarh and at the Jamia Millia Islamia University here.

India: Nation-wide strike impacts banking services at PSU banks

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) Services of public sector banks were impacted on Saturday as nation-wide strike by employee unions entered its second day.

The strike call has been given by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine bank unions, including All India Bank Officers' Confederation (AIBOC), All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW) to press for wage revision pending since November 2017.

India: Man held for raping minor grand-niece in MP

Rajgarh (MP), Feb 1 (PTI) A 60-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping his six-year-old grand-niece at Biaora city in Madhya Pradesh, police said on Saturday.

The police arrested the accused, who is the brother of the victim's grandfather, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, Biaora's sub-divisional officer of police N K Nahar said.

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday announced cuts in personal income tax, extended tax benefits for affordable housing and gave relief to companies on payment of dividend in the Union Budget for 2020-21 as the government looked to boost consumption to bring the economy out of the worst slowdown in 11 years.

India's government to spend $40 billion on farm sector to lift wobbly economy; fiscal deficit slips

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India’s government said on Saturday it would inject nearly $40 billion into the sprawling farm sector and billions more into a federal water scheme to get broader economic growth back up from its lowest in a decade.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, presenting the 2020/21 budget for the financial year beginning April 1 to parliament, said the fiscal deficit for the current year would widen to 3.8% of gross domestic product, up from 3.3% targeted for the current year.
