India: WB assembly passes anti-CAA resolution, demands its repeal

Kolkata, Jan 27 (PTI) The West Bengal Assembly Monday passed a resolution against CAA brought by the state government demanding that the contentious citizenship law be repealed forthwith and NPR and the proposed NRC be withdrawn.

Speaking on the resolution, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the Citizenship Amendment Act is "against the Constitution and humanity".

India: Sharjeel Imam to be produced in Delhi court on Wednesday

New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) Anti-CAA activist Sharjeel Imam, who was arrested by the Delhi Police's Crime Branch from Bihar's Jehanabad in a sedition case, will be produced in the Patiala House court on Wednesday, police said.

Imam was arrested on Tuesday for making allegedly inflammatory speeches at the Jamia Millia Islamia University here and in Aligarh. He reached Delhi on Wednesday and will be produced in the Patiala House court the same day, they said.

India: Very sad that BJP calling me 'terrorist': Kejriwal

New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he faced many difficulties to help people and in return the BJP has called him a "terrorist".

Tagging a media report according to which BJP MP Parvesh Verma had allegedly called him a terrorist, Kejriwal said he has been working day and night towards the welfare of people.

india: AAP seeks 48-hour campaigning ban on Amit Shah

New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) AAP has asked the Election Commission to impose a 48-hour campaigning ban on Union Home Minister Amit Shah for allegedly tweeting a "fake" video on Delhi government schools, party leader Sanjay Singh said on Wednesday.

AAP leaders Singh and Pankaj Gupta complained to the EC against the circulation of the "fake" videos of Delhi government schools by BJP leaders to "falsely defame" Delhiites.

India: Two girls abducted, gang-raped in UP

Ballia, Jan 29 (PTI) Two girls were allegedly abducted and gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, police said on Wednesday.

The girls, aged 16 and 17, were allegedly abducted by Asif and Chunnu Qureshi of the same village on Saturday. Another accused, identified as Suraj Chauhan, helped them in confining the girls to an unknown place where they allegedly raped the minors, ASP Sanjay Yadav said.

India: JD(U) expels Prashant Kishor and Pavan Varma over CAA differences

New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) JD(U) on Wednesday expelled its vice president Prashant Kishor and general secretary Pavan Varma from the party, saying their conduct in recent past has made it clear that they don't want to abide by the party's discipline.

Both leaders have been critical of the party president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his support to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Population Register (NPR).

Death Toll From India Bus Accident Rises To 26

MUMBAI, Jan 29 (NNN-PTI) — The death toll from a state transport bus accident on Tuesday afternoon, in India’s state of Maharashtra rose to 20, with 30 other injured passengers admitted to hospital, local police said.

The accident happened when the driver of the bus lost control, after one of the tyres burst, and it collided with a three-wheeler auto, and fell into a 70-foot well, at Malegaon, 271 km northeast of Mumbai. The well near the highway was close to an open-air laundromat or lavoir (wash house).

India: Disparity in school holidays lingers narrowly

Kanpur: Disparity in holidays at school is not uncommon narrowly. Fourth major bathing of the Magh Mela falls on Jan 29 as some schools in Kanpur are closed for the day. There are other schools which will remain closed on Thursday.  However, one news-item published in prominent news daily informs the auspicious bathing day falls on January 30 at Allahabad. 

India: Anti-CAA activist Sharjeel Imam arrested in Bihar

Jehanabad, Jan 28 (PTI) Anti-CAA activist Sharjeel Imam, who was on the run after sedition charges were slapped against him for allegedly making inflammatory statements, was arrested from Bihar's Jehanabad district on Tuesday, state's police chief Gupteshwar Pandey said.

The JNU scholar was wanted by police of several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Delhi.
