India: Bars in five-star UP hotels to stay open till 4 am

Lucknow, Jan 27 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to allow bars in big cities to remain open up to 2 am and those in five-star hotels till 4 am, an hour later than earlier.

Principal secretary Sanjay Bhoosreddy told PTI that the decision, which will come into effect on April 1, is meant for the convenience of guests, particularly foreigners.

India: West Bengal govt tables anti-CAA resolution in Assembly

Kolkata, Jan 27 (PTI) The West Bengal government on Monday tabled a resolution against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in the Assembly.

The resolution appeals to the Union government to repeal the amended citizenship law and revoke plans to implement NRC and update NPR.

State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee introduced the resolution in the House around 2 pm.

India plans sale of debt-laden national carrier Air India

NEW DELHI (AP) — India said Monday it plans to sell its entire stake in the national carrier Air India to shore up falling government revenues amid an economic slowdown, after an initial attempt last year failed to attract a single bidder.

The government issued a document on Monday inviting initial expressions of interest in the airline, which operates both domestic and international routes and has accumulated huge losses in the past decade.

India: AMU Vice Chancellor heckled at R Day function

Aligarh, Jan 26 (PTI) AMU Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor was on Sunday heckled by a group of students during his Republic Day speech here soon after he termed as "unfortunate" the recent happenings on the campus and said peaceful protests will be allowed on any issue within the ambit of law.

The incident occurred when the VC was addressing the Republic Day function held amid tight security at the Aligarh Muslim University, which has been rocked by protests by students and teachers against the amended citizenship law.

India: Researchers mistaken for NRC team, caught by villagers, handed over to police

Darbhanga (Bihar), Jan 26 (PTI) A team of researchers from Lucknow mistaken as surveyors for NRC was caught by residents of a village here and handed over to the police, a senior official said on Sunday.

Superintendent of Police, Darbhanga, Babu Ram said the incident took place on Friday when the team, comprising 12 people, including four women, visited a village under Jamalpur police station area.

Mangaluru, Jan 25 (PTI) The man suspected to have planted a bomb at the city airport was on Saturday taken to Udupi where he has a bank account and a few other places he had frequented in the past.

Aditya Rao was taken to the Kunjibettu branch of Karnataka Bank in Udupi where he has an account and safe deposit locker, police sources said.

India: Tenant, owner will pay if house tax remains unpaid

Kanpur: It has been referred that the Nagar Nigam will now realise the house tax both from the house owner as well as the tenant if the landlord default in paying the tax within the given period.

An opinion to this effect has been unfolded by the city mayor Pramila Pandey at a meeting held with the disgruntled traders of various committees here. She made it that the NN would realize the house tax from both the entities in the case of outstanding dues.

India: GFP to seek debate on Citizenship Act in Goa Assembly

Panaji, Jan 25 (PTI) NDA ally Goa Forward Party (GFP) on Saturday said it would be moving a motion seeking a debate on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) during the coming session of the Goa Legislative Assembly.

The budget session of the Assembly will be held from February 3 to 7.

GFP chief Vijai Sardesai said that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday appealed opponents of the CAA to have an open debate with him.
