India: Woman kept hostage and raped for 5 days in UP's Bhadohi

Bhadohi (UP), Jan 24 (PTI) An 18 year-old married woman was allegedly kept hostage and raped for five days by a man in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district, police said on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Vishal Saroj, who hails from the same village as that of the woman. The woman got married three months back.

India: Several people injured in clash between two groups

Kolkata, Jan 24 (PTI) Several persons including two policemen were injured when rival groups clashed in the southern part of the city's Jodhpur Park area over a discussion on the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, police said on Friday.

The clash broke out on Thursday night when a group of men allegedly owing allegiance to the BJP, attacked a group of Trinamool Congress activists with knives and sticks when they were denied to participate in a CAA discussion, a police officer said.

India: Man held for rape, murder of 8-year-old girl

Sivakasi, Jan 24 (PTI) A 20-year-old man from Assam, working as a casual labourer in a cloth bag company, has been arrested for allegedly raping andmurdering an eight- year-old girl here, police said on Thursday.

Five others, also belonging to Assam, have also been involved in the crime and were absconding, the police said.

India: Operate only with J&K Bank: Admin tells officers

Jammu, Jan 24 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday directed officers to close all official accounts in banks other than the J&K Bank by January 31 or face stern disciplinary action.

The J&K administration had last year issued a direction to accounts officers and drawing and disbursing (DDOs) asking them to open official accounts only in J&K Bank.

The J&K Bank is the official bank of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Brazilian Prez arrives on 4-day India visit

New Delhi, Jan 24 (PTI) Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro arrived here Friday on a four-day visit with an aim to further expand the already close strategic partnership with India.

Bolsonaro will be the chief guest at India's 71st Republic Day Parade on January 26, besides holding talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind.

India: Karnataka BJP MP booked by Kerala Police for tweet

Malappuram (Kerala)/Bengaluru, Jan 24 (PTI) Karnataka BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje has been booked by the Kerala police on charges of promoting enmity between different groups for her allegation that Hindus of a panchayat in Malappuram District were denied water as they supported the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Police said the case has been registered against the MP and a few others on a complaint from a lawyer while the Kuttipuram Panchayat denied her charge made in a recent tweet.

Kanpur: After a gap of several weeks the Jajmauites passed Friday in the full bright sun over the head. Ample sunshine made them enjoy the warmth in the midst of nature's bounties. 

Despite the cloudy weather, the Sunrays were reaching in an ample quantity on the living earth. Though the minimum temperature stays at 5 degrees Celsius, the sun provided substantial respite to the residents living in tannery town here.

India once again rejects US Pres Trump’s offer to mediate in Kashmir issue

NEW DELHI, Jan 24 (NNN-Xinhua) — India once again rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate in the Kashmir issue, saying it had to be “bilaterally” resolved with Pakistan.

In a statement, Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Raveesh Kumar said that there was no role for any third party in this matter.

India: Delhi court directs police to file action taken report against police action on Jamia students

New Delhi, Jan 22 (PTI) A Delhi court Wednesday directed the police to file an action taken report on the plea of Jamia Millia Islamia University seeking registration of FIR against police action on students at the varsity last month.

Metropolitan Magistrate Rajat Goyal sought report from Delhi police by March 16.

JMIU students and locals had protested at Jamia Nagar in Delhi on December 15, 2019 against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

India: 644 militants surrender in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 23 (PTI) A total of 644 militants of eight banned insurgent outfits surrendered in Assam on Thursday along with 177 arms, police said.

The members of the insurgent groups -- ULFA (I), NDFB, RNLF, KLO, CPI (Maoist), NSLA, ADF and NLFB -- surrendered in presence of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at a programme here.
