War on Ukraine reducing Yemen's access to food

10 March 2022; MEMO: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) yesterday warned that the war in Ukraine could reduce Yemenis' access to their basic needs due to the possible increase in food prices.

"In a country where food insecurity is already threatening over 16.2 million people, the severity of food and water needs is dangerously acute in Taiz and other nearby areas highly impacted by ongoing violence," the ICRC said in a report on its official website.

UN Envoy Continues Consultations With Yemen’s Political Parties

ADEN, Mar 10 (NNN-YPA) – UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, continued yesterday, his consultations with Yemeni political parties, in a bid to resume peace talks.

The envoy’s office said in a statement that, he held bilateral meetings in Jordan’s capital, Amman, with representatives of Yemeni parties, aiming to create a framework for a comprehensive solution to end the protracted civil war.

Yemen’s Houthis Shot Down “Drone Of Saudi-Led Coalition”

SANAA, Mar 9 (NNN-YPA) – Yemen’s Houthi militia announced yesterday, they shot down a drone above Harad city, in the north-western province of Hajjah, the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV quoted a statement by Houthi military spokesman as saying.

The Houthis said, the drone “was believed to be made in the United States and belongs to the Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen.”

The coalition has made no comment yet.

The coalition-backed Yemeni government forces have been fighting the Houthi militia for nearly seven years, and Hajjah is among the critical frontlines.

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie in Aden to draw attention to Yemen conflict

06 March 2022; MEMO: Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie visited the southern city of Aden on Sunday to draw attention to the catastrophic consequences of the 8-year conflict in Yemen, Anadolu Agency reported.

"She will be visiting Yemeni families, including displaced families and refugees, to hear directly from them how the conflict has ripped their lives apart," the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement.

Two Int’l Aid Workers Kidnapped By Unknown Gunmen In Yemen

ADEN, Mar 6 (NNN-YPA) – Two workers of the international medical charity, Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres/MSF), were kidnapped by gunmen, in Yemen’s south-eastern province of Hadramout yesterday, a security official said.

The aid workers, nationals of Germany and Mexico, were intercepted, when travelling in the western part of Hadramout, the local security source said.

“The unidentified gunmen set up an armed ambush and kidnapped two MSF’s aid workers, driving them to unknown whereabouts,” the local source said.

Yemeni Houthis accept UN proposal over rusting oil tanker on Red Sea

SANAA, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi militia has reached an agreement with the United Nations (UN) to deal with a rusting oil tanker carrying over 1 million barrels of crude oil off the war-torn country's Red Sea coast.

"A memorandum of understanding has been signed with the United Nations for the Safer tanker," Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, head of the Houthi supreme revolutionary committee, said on Twitter on Saturday.

Yemeni gov't forces destroy hashish, drugs in NW border city

HAJJAH, Yemen, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's government forces have burned 1,100 kg of hashish and 8,000 narcotic pills seized from smugglers in the past four months in the northwestern province of Hajjah, a security official said Friday.

The destruction was carried out on Thursday in the government-controlled Red Sea city of Midi, in the presence of representatives of the court, public prosecution and the security services.

Yemeni Gov’t Welcomes New UNSC Arms Embargo On Houthi Militia

ADEN, Mar 2 (NNN-YPA) – The Yemeni government and several other Arab countries, yesterday, welcomed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution, that imposed an arms embargo on the Houthi militia in Yemen, as an entity.

The Houthi militia currently controls the capital, Sanaa, and most key northern provinces of the Arab world’s poorest country.

Undeclared Talks Between Yemeni Warring Factions In Oman End In Deadlock

ADEN, Feb 25 (NNN-YPA) – An undeclared round of UN-brokered talks between Yemen’s warring factions, failed to reach an agreement, to end the years-long military conflict in the country, a Yemeni official said, yesterday.

“During the past months, the Houthi rebel militia and Yemen’s government, engaged in a series of undeclared negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations in Oman, in an attempt to end the bloody fighting,” the local government source said.
