Online Chess: Anand rested as India lose to China

Chennai, May 9 (PTI) India continued their shoddy show losing 1.5.-2.5 to title contenders and top seed China in the ninth round of FIDE-Chess.com Online Nations Cup on Saturday.

With former world champion Viswanathan Anand resting, the Indian team managed to hold their own against the favourites before Yu Yangyi subdued B Adhiban with black pieces to secure another victory in the tournament.

Vidit Gujrathi (Elo 2636), playing on the top board, held higher-ranked Wang Hao (Elo 2750) to a draw.

India: TN to return 24,000 rapid testing kits to China

Chennai, Apr 27 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu government on Monday announced returning 24,000 rapid test kits imported from China, hours after the ICMR asked states to stop using the COVID-19 rapid antibody kits procured from two companies in the Asian country to be sent back to the suppliers.

The government and opposition DMK clashed over the pricing of the kits, with the latter demanding 'transparency' while the ruling dispensation asserted that the procurement was done based on rates fixed by the Centre.

India: Plea filed in court seeking quashing of lockdown

Chennai Apr 25 (PTI) A plea has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking quashing of the complete lockdown announced by theState government for four days from Sunday in some cities and three days in some other municipal corporations.

Challenging the shutdown the petitioner submitted it was unlawful and unconstitutional.

According to the petitioner, a day after the announcement on April 25, all the five corporations witnessed large gathering of public to stock up essential commodities and vegetables in complete violation of social distancing.

India: TN HC notice to Centre on stranded Indians in Malaysia

Chennai, Apr 9 (PTI) The Madras High Court has ordered notice to the Centre on a plea to bring about 350 stranded Indians back from Malaysia due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

A special division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice R Hemalatha issued the notice to the union external affairs ministry on the PIL moved by advocate M Gnanasekar and posted the matter for further hearing after a week.

India: 8 Indonesians arrested for visa violations in TN

Ramanathapuram (TN), Apr 9 (PTI) Eight Indonesians were arrested here on Thursday for alleged visa violations after they participated in various religious meetings in the country, police here said.

A local person who facilitated their stay has also been picked up, even as the arrested Indonesian nationals have been quarantined and their blood samples taken for coronavirus tests, police added.

The foreigners had arrived on March 22 and attended various religious meetings here and in Delhi.

India: 10 Malaysian Jamaat meet attendees offloaded from flight, sent through chartered flight

Chennai, Apr 5 (PTI) As many as 10 Malaysian attendees of a recent Tablighi Jamaat congregation at Delhi were on Sunday offloaded from a special chartered flight to Malaysia from here, officials said.

Of the 167 Malaysian Tamils who boarded the flight, 10 people, were offloaded after it was ascertained that they had participated in the recent meeting at the national capital, they said.

World chess body postpones Olympaid to 2021

Chennai, Mar 25 (PTI) The world governing body of chess, FIDE, has postponed the Olympiad, scheduled for August 5-17 in Moscow, to 2021 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The global chess body issued a statement saying that the Olympiad and the FIDE Congress, slated to be held in August in Moscow and Khanty-Mansiysk respectively, are rescheduled to the summer of 2021 at the same locations.

India: Class 1-9 students will be promoted in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Mar 25 (PTI) All students from first to ninth standard in Tamil Nadu will be promoted considering the closure of schools to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said here on Wednesday.

Considering the welfare of students, who could not sit for their annual examinations due to closure of schools, Palaniswami said he ordered the School Education Department to announce promotion of all students from first to ninth standard.

India: TN CM for home quarantine stickers on doors of foreign returnees' houses

Chennai, Mar 23 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu government on Monday announced a series of intensified measures to tackle coronavirus such as pasting stickers on the houses of overseas returnees advised self-quarantine and setting apart over 9,000 beds and 560 ventilators in government hospitals.
