India: "We have got battery torch symbol," says Kamal Haasan

Chennai, Jan 15 (PTI) Makkal Needhi Maiam has been allotted 'battery torch' symbol by the Election Commission for the coming assembly elections, party chief Kamal Haasan said here on Friday.

"We have been allotted torchlight symbol for all the 234 assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu," he said in a video message on his twitter handle.

Assembly elections are likely to be held during April-May in the state.

MNM contested on the symbol of torchlight in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and garnered a vote share of 3.77 per cent.

Sri Lankan Navy apprehends nine Indian fishermen

Rameswaram (TN), Jan 10 (PTI) The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested nine Indian fishermen and seized one boat for allegedly fishing in that country's waters, besides damaging fishing nets in a separate incident, officials said here on Sunday.

The fishermen were arrested near Neduntheevu on Saturday, Fisheries department officials said, adding that one boat was also seized by the Lankan navy.

In a separate incident, the Lankan navy personnel allegedly damaged fishing nets in 20 mechanised boats near Katchatheevu on Saturday, the officials added.

India: 40-year-old widow gang-raped in temple

Nagapattinam, Jan 8 (PTI) A 40-year-old widow working as a construction labourer in Nagapattinam was allegedly gang- raped in a temple, police said on Friday.

Two men have been arrested in this connection, the police said.

On Thursday night, the two stalked the widow going towards her sister's house nearby, and allegedly dragged her at knife-point to the temple, they said.

There, the duo allegedly gang-raped her until the wee hours of today and fled the scene, the police said.

The woman sustained injuries and fainted, they said.

India: DMK will waive education loans if voted to power: Stalin

Erode (TN), Jan 3 (PTI): The DMK would waive education loans taken by students for higher studies if the party comes to power after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which are to be held in April-May.

The DMK president and Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly M K Stalin made this statement on Sunday while addressing a gathering at V Mettupalayam village in Erode west constituency where a people's grama sabha meeting was held.

India: 2 Chinese among 4 held for running instant loan app

Chennai, Jan 2 (PTI): Two Chinese and as many Indian nationals have been arrested for allegedly operating instant loan apps, police said on Saturday.

Investigation, based on a complaint here, revealed the prime accused to be operating from China, the police said.

The two Indians had been operating the call centre from Bengaluru and had employed over 100 people to provide quick online loans, they said.

India: DMK, allies begin hunger strike in support of protesting farmers

Chennai, Dec 18 (PTI) The DMK-led opposition in Tamil Nadu on Friday embarked on a day-long hunger strike in support of farmers protesting against the three farm laws enacted by the Centre recently.

Farmers, mainly from Punjab and Haryana, have been protesting outside Delhi for over three weeks against the central legislations.

On Friday, DMK chief and Leader of Opposition, M K Stalin, party MP Kanimozhi and leaders of alliance parties participated in the protest here.

Sri Lankan navy apprehends 47 Indian fishermen

Rameswaram (TN), Dec 14 (PTI) As many as 47 Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Monday for allegedly fishing in that country's waters, officials here said.

Those apprehended by the Lankan navy hailed from Rameswaram and Puthukottai, even as seven boats were also seized, they added.

The fishermen were picked up by the island nation's navy while they were fishing near Neduntheevu there, a senior Fisheries department official said.

While 27 fishermen hailed from Rameswaram, the others were from Puthukottai.

India: 103 kg gold seized and sealed by FBI missing

New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) The CBI set up an "internal inquiry" under an SP-ranked officer after 103 kg gold out of a total 400 kg, seized and sealed by it eight years ago, was found missing, but the probe is yet to be completed as COVID-19-induced restrictions delayed it, officials said.

The internal inquiry is underway and strict action will be taken if any adverse role of any CBI official surfaces, the CBI spokesperson said in a statement on Saturday evening.

India: HC quashes Income Tax proceedings against Karti Chidambaram& his wife

Chennai,Dec 12 (PTI) The Madras High Court has quashed the Income Tax proceedings initiated against Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram,and his wife over alleged non-disclosure of cash transactions of about Rs seven crore following sale of a property near here.

The Court, while ruling that the action is "not maintainable and premature", clarified that proceedings may be initiated again if the authority concerned deemed the same is required after proper assessment.
