India: Cyclone 'Burevi' to hit TN on Dec 4

New Delhi, Dec 1 (PTI) Cyclone Burevi is very likely to hit Tamil Nadu on December 4, the Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

This is the second cyclone that is predicted to hit the state in a week. Last week, a very severe cyclonic storm, Nivar, had battered the southern state.

Burevi is unlikely to be as intense as Nivar, IMD director general Mrutunjay Mohapatra said.

It is expected to first hit Sri Lanka on December 2 and then Tamil Nadu on December 4.

India: TNCC chief among scores of Congress workers detained for protesting new farm laws

Coimbatore, Nov 22 (PTI): TNCC president K S Alagiri was among the scores of Congress workers detained near here on Sunday when they tried to take out a procession carrying ploughs to condemn the new farm laws brought in by the Centre.

Since there was no permission to take out the procession, the police prevented the workers, led by Alagiri, from proceeding leading to the detention.

After an hour, they were released, police said.

India: DMK slams BJP's "Hindi dominance sentiments"

Chennai, Nov 20 (PTI) DMK President M K Stalin on Friday lashed out at what he called the Centre's "Hindi dominance sentiment" after two MPs from Tamil Nadu said they received official communications from Union Ministers in that language.

On his Twitter handle, Stalin tagged the posts of his party's Rajya Sabha member P Wilson and that of CPI (M) Lok Sabha member Su Venkatesan, where they said they received replies from Home Minister Amit Shah and his colleague Nityanand Rai, respectively, in Hindi on different issues.

Four Indian fishermen held by Lankan Navy

Nagapattinam(TN), Nov 10 (PTI) FourTamil Nadu fishermen werearrestedby the Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday when they were allegedly fishing in the sea off Kodiakarai coast, a fishermen association here said.

The fishermenbelonging to Tarangambadi in this district were apprehended for allegedly entering the Lankan territorial waters.

Thefishermenventured into the sea on November 7 and were fishing about 20 knots southeast of Kodiakarai this morning when the Lankan naval personnelcame to the spot and arrestedthem, representatives of the association claimed.

India: Vaiko urges PM to get TN boats seized by Sri Lanka released

Chennai, Nov 9 (PTI) MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate steps for release of over 100 impounded mechanised boats of Tamil Nadu fishermen from Sri Lanka or ensure compensation.

Citing news reports, he said a Sri Lankan court has ordered 121 boats seized from the fishermen to be 'destroyed', adding it was shocking.

Of the over 100 boats, as many as 88 were from Rameswaram, Vaiko, a Rajya Sabha MP, said in a letter to Modi.

India: Feel very happy over Kamala Harris' victory, says aunt

Chennai, Nov 8 (PTI) City-based maternal aunt of US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, Dr Sarala Gopalan, is elated over her niece's feat and now hopes to attend her swearing-in ceremony.

The jubilant veteran doctor told PTI on Sunday that she couldn't speak to Harris on Saturday as she spent the entire day waiting for the announcement on her victory.

"How do you think I should feel about her victory. I feel very happy," a proud Gopalan, a senior consultant at the Voluntary Health Services here, said.

India: TN CM hails Kamala Harris' "astounding victory"

Chennai, Nov 8 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Sunday greeted US President-elect Joe Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris and particularly recalled her Tamil Nadu roots.

Democrat Joe Biden on Saturday defeated incumbent Republican US President Donald Trump in the closely-fought US presidential elections.

In a tweet, Palaniswami expressed joy over Harris becoming the first woman to be elected as vice-president of the US following her "astounding victory."

India: TN village prays for Kamala Harris' victory in US polls

Chennai, Nov 3 (PTI) As millions of US citizens queue up to vote for their next President and his deputy, the people of Thulasenthirapuram in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday prayed for the success of Kamala Harris, Democratic Vice-Presidential nominee, who has a connect to this small village.

Posters were put up in many parts of the village in Tiruvarur district in the state wishing Harris success, with locals holding special prayers seeking divine intervention.

India: VCK stages protest, seeks ban on 'Manusmriti'

Chennai, Oct 24 (PTI) The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi staged a protest here on Saturday seeking a ban on the ancient Hindu text Manusmriti, alleging it denigrated women.

Led by party chief and Lok Sabha MP Thol Thirumavalavan, VCK cadres held placards alleging that the text "belittled" working classes and justified violence against them.

Also, they alleged it had disparaging reference to women and sought a ban on the text.

Outfits including the Dravidar Kazhagam and the May 17 supported the protest.

India: Bid to smuggle Rs 30 lakh worth drug to Australia foiled

Chennai, Oct 13 (PTI) A bid to smuggle Rs 30 lakh worth of a narcotic to Australia through courier was foiled by the Customs Department and four people, including the mastermind, arrested in this connection, officials said.

Three kilos of Pseudoephedrine in powder form, packed in 37 plastic pouches marked as 'spices', was recovered recently from Chennai airport by the officials, who acted on specific inputs, a release said.

The drug was concealed along with other spice powder packets.
